Some catfish species get that large or larger but flathead ain't one of them. 280 pounds is way more than double the weight of the largest I ever heard of being caught.

Phone, nice pussy but I am with Newt on this one. The only yankee thing in that picture is the guy holding the cat. He looks a bit like Captain Dave of the FV-Tuna.com on Wicked Tuna. Now that's a show with some seriously big fish. I love US fishing shows everyone is so enthusiastic and excitable.

Newt's right - I just bit hook line and sinker without even giving any thought to the pic. Close examination shows it not to be a very good photo chop job even.

LOL My experience of flatheads was at Lake Travis, Texas. Fly-fishing for sunfish to rack-up my species list. Returned a sunfish and something went "GLOP" (I still had my hearing back then)

 

Long way from a tackle store, so put on my biggest fly with a lip-hooked bluegill, chucked out this improvised live-bait rig, and finished up with a couple of LM black bass and a couple of flatheads. Playing a four-pound cat on a #4 fly-rod is "interesting"

 

Took them back to base and filleted, skinned, fried and ate them. The black bass were delicious, the flatheads were disgusting. All over the world people have recommended various catfish for eating. I believed them at first but have learnt the hard way. In my not-so-humble opinion, all cats, furred or finned are inedible.

Don't you get hooked also. Latimeria posted the same damn photo as a wels. Plenty of "man eating catfish" stories out there as well.
