Until you have tried it, and got the "feel" of a centrepin, it is difficult to explain.

Pot luck on ebay is probably your best bet, and see how you get on with it.

If you don't like it, then not much money wasted.

If you do take to the pin, then you might want to look at a new reel. The Okuma Sheffield I have, and other Okumas seen, are good value for money.

I have a few older 'pins, Aerial, Royal Supreme, etc, as good as any modern reel.

But buying a "classic" off ebay is best postponed until you know what to look for.

Have same rod & use one of these:

Despite having dearer reels my current favourite is the Leeds, in my honest opinion a greatly underrated reel and often great value, mine wa £9.00 inc. p&p.

I bought a leeds as a first centre pin and really didn't enjoy using it. I'm not sure why. Bought a trudex after that, it doesn't spin half as well as the leeds but I enjoy using it a lot more. I guess it's true what people say you really do get a 'feel' for a pin.

Although I'd previously used my dads 'Match Arial' the first pin that I owned myself was a 'Black Cat' which although it would spin for around 2.5 minutes when flicked with a finger it was not an Ideal trotting pin as because of spool weight/inertia problems it didn't start turning until I set it in motion first with my finger, however It was fine for fishing static baits for Carp, Tench etc. close in on stillwaters or for stret pegging on streams.

The pin I use nowerdays is the OKUMA Sheffield which cost me £120 when I bought it a couple of years ago and which is a very good trotting reel which if it had a well placed check lever instead of a knurled knob would be even better because when I have cold hands on a cold winters day and want to move swims I find the knob is harder to operate than a lever LOL.

I think if I had to stick to a budget I would probably buy myself an OKUMA Aventa Pro which is also an excellent trotting pin but can be bought for a lot less than the Sheffield.

Agreed. I learnt to use my second finger to nudge the check lever on my Avon Royal Supreme. The Sheffield is fine except for that fiddly little knob.
