Making Videos For The Internet

Elton

Ages ago, I bought my wife a Sony DCR PC109E mini DV camcorder, which she hardly ever uses.

Can this be used to produce videos for the internet?

If so, what's the cheapest, effective way of producing reasonable quality clips?

Using which OS: XP, Vista, Linux, MACOS X?

Linux for all its good points is IMO, crap at video. The EASIEST way would to get a hold of a Mac and use iMovie. Microsoft Movie Maker in XP sucks, big time. I've not tried the Vista equivalent but will give it a go today and see what I think. Adobe Premier Elements is what I would go for if I was using XP. You should be able to pick up a copy for about £60.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

So, taking it back a step, there is a way that I can plug that camcorder thing into my PC?

You will need a PC with Firewire (IEEE 1394) ports, or USB 2. Unfortunately Sony neglected to actually equip this camera with either USB or Firewire ports, you need to buy a separate docking station for it. Pretty crap for a camera that cost up to £600 3 years ago.

Any idea where I'd get a docking station from?

Hmmm...these reviews say that it comes with a docking station:

I'll ask the wife where the box for it is later.

AFAIK they DID come with the docking station gadget.

Hi corydoras

Not yet used in anger, but I have installed this on ubuntu

http://lives.sourceforge.net/

so far seems pretty useful - certainly better than anything on linux I've used before

Nice one Nick, thanks for that.

I just wish that someone would do something like iLife for Linux. All of this excellent software for just $79? I would pay that, wouldn't you?

I'm on a PC with XP, if that helps.

Forgot to ask the misses last night. Will ask when it wakes up.
