Certainly was our 'shite' I remember it well.

27% inflation, unions in power ;) winter of discontent, country broke & having to go cap in hand to the IMF to bail us out, unemployment & interest rates rising rapidly, economy extremely fragile & on point of collapse & oh yes I nearly lost my house & job!!

I agree with you John we don't need global help, we can do it all much better all by ourselves.

Peter.

Strange how peoples perception of the time varies according to how it effected them.

The strict policies of Thatcherism, and the ensuing butchering of the manufacturing sector, did cost me a house, and several jobs, as Maggie marched on waving her 'Bible according to Hayak' like a kind of western Chairman Mao.

Mind you I was only one of the 3,000,000 unemployed that were effected.

Guest challenge

Thatcher was an evil tyrant who spurned a corrupt i am all right jack society.

She destroyed our major industries because she wanted to destroy socialism and it’s supporters in favour of a capitalist society.

What we have today is the small print that would be capitalists (who bought there council houses and shares in BT) didn’t bother to read.

John was right again when he said our viewpoints are most definately coloured by how we are affected by either Tory or Labour policies, & in accordance with that thought Challenge it would seem you didn't fare well, as of course 1000's of others didn't also.

But evil Tyrant,

Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao, Hitler certainly justify that description but Maggie surely not, not even from a staunch labour position.

If a real evil tyrant had brought you to your knees MrM, you could consider yourself damn lucky.

history differs in the eyes of those that experience it :D

its crazy how the world revolves about bits of paper! shares are just gambling chips you gamble them ,when the shares go up you rub your hands when they drop you whine they only loose the initial cost if they sell them at less than they bought them or the company folds in reality shareholders lose nothing in share falls or rises all the time they hang onto them.

large companies putting pension funds into shares are just gambling other peoples money .

and if banks lend far more than they get in then the banking system is corrupt they are also gambling with other peoples money then borrowing money to cover it .

in all of them if shares and gambling were got rid off then it would be better ,even depts are sold on !!!absolute madness!

i'm one of those sub prime lendees if the bank wanted their overdraft back i wouldnt have a chance on earth to pay it back but the banks get their interest out of me for lending it ,i expect though to get back their money they would have no problem giving me a loan to cover it ,it would be the only way! its pointless sueing someone without money or assets.

if they are stupid enough to offer then theres plenty stupid enough or poor enough to take it hence where the problem starts ,the banks know how much the lendee gets in every month so knows the odds but still lend money ,crazy gambling fever nothing less.

our enemies must be chuckling away to themselves then forcing the price of oil up again rubbing it in :D
