Tried a couple of "night sky" photos over on the Mull of Galloway last week. Only have a Canon A700 Digital camera but gave it my best shot. Both tripod shots with a 15 second exposure. Comments please !!:unsure: Would really appreciate any hints for this type of photography. Over on my caravan park on the Mull of Galloway there is hardly any light pollution is it is an ideal spot for this type of work

Snatcher, stars...good, very :)

Sunset, I can't see how you could have done any better, I have tried similar shots with the same sort of results.

Cliff, your third shot may look better with part of the flower and stalk protruding across the picture....just may :)

But I like your thinking though.

Star shots, been doing them for over 30 years :headhurt:

Stars near the Pole only move a small amount so a longer exposure can be used, up to 1 minute if your camera will allow it. Those near the celestial equator however will move a lot faster, even a 30 second exposure will show a small amount of streaking as the stars move across the sky.

I tend to use an ISO of 300, aperture fully open, exposure between 20-30 seconds. If you can, set the timer delay on your camera to reduce any camera-shake from you pressing the shutter button :)

Here's one of Orion, showing the streaking that you'll get from a 30 second exposure....

Love them both Snatcher, but whilst remembering photograhy is very subjective, one mans meat 'an all that! can I suggest a couple of alterations I would have done.

You've captured the Plough constellation beautifully, however playing about with some post processing levels would produce a darker background, which I think would have notched the shot up another level.

You're moonrise/Moonset shot is very good. The problem of course is getting the exposure balance right between two extremes, the Moon & it's surrounding landscape. On a personal level, I think you could have exposed a little more for the Moon because the Moon & it's reflected image are well blown out. However, the amount of light you had available should still have allowed you to keep your landscape at a viewable level. There is unfortunately a lot of noise in the picture, almost inevitable with a long exposure shot, so perhaps a run through Neat image or some other noise reduction programme would have helped.

Hope that doesn't sound too critical Snatcher, because I do think they are both very good.
