A mate of mine was fishing today and he said there were quite a few dead or dying fish in the pool he was fishing. They were carp and he described them being covered in patches of what looked like a thin film of brown mud.

Any clues?

Have a look on this site Phil, lower down it gives the visible signs of CNGV, which sound like the symptoms you describe.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

Yep, that looks like the culprit gozzer, thanks.

Looks like that particular fishery is in big trouble. Shame as it has quite a few 20's and 30's in it.

I wonder if the owner is supposed to report it to anyone?

a quick Google seems to indicate CNGV is part of the family of Carp virus that include KHV. That might make it notifiable.

This lethal disease is highly contagious and extremely virulent

I'd drop a line to the EA.

Any concerns over such things should really be passed to people who know what they are doing and can deal with any problem. Not the local "expert",bailliff, angling club etc.-

Speed can be crucial.

And thats my "non indicative opinion"!

Thanks for the replies. My mate phoned the EA today and they said they'd investigate it. They told him to wash any gear that had come into contact with the water before going fishing again.
