Hello

Iv'e recently got into fishing and I braught a wychwood 2 3/4lb tc carp rod with a wychwood rogue 50 reel with 10lb line. Now the little lake I have been fishing at has carp to 7lbs, roach, tench and rud, I now realize this outfit is overkill for there and im probly missing bite's when im ledgering as the rod is to stiff.

I will be wanting to fish at river's in the near future so im after a rod with more feel is this a good rod? Shimano Catana AX Barbel Specialist

Thank's

What type of fishing are you doing, float or ledgering? For float fishing I always use a 12ft match rod it didn't cost a fortune about £50 12 years ago and it has a light enough tip to not pull a hook from the mouth of a small fish but enough power in it to land carp up to 20lb ( if you're careful and there isn't many snags ). Another option might be a Avon rod, these have a 1.5lb tc and come with a selection of tips ( the john wilson one has 3 quiver tips and a match tip ) so this could be used for river float fishing or, ledgering with a quiver tip. But if you can give some more details regarding the type of fishing you do that would help I think.

Edit - Ahh ok just re-read your post, and read that you are ledgering. Are you using an alarm or do you need a quiver tip on the rod?

Hi Ash. I wanted a float rod to give me good sport with similar sized carp as you have. Like you I didn't want to outgun tench bream crucians etc. I went for a Drennan series 7 powerefloat carp rod and I love it. With a match sized reel loaded with 6lb line it has handled carp to around 12lb. and has given me good sport with smaller species. Yesterday I was at a local lake where a carp was showing on the far bank around 25 30 yards away. I set up with a small running leger, cast to the fish watching the rod tip and hey presto a 7lb mirror came my way.

I am delighted with the rod which I beleive retails around 80 quid although I got mine as new on ebay for 60.

Cheer's for the advice eerm and barry.

After doing alot of reading this past week iv'e decided a float rod would be my best choice for coarse fishing rather than just targeting big carp by ledgering and would give me the sport i'm looking for.

Now i'm alowing upto 100 to get a float rod with so any advice/reviews on which rod to get.

Has anyone had any experience with any of these rods god or bad?

I bought one of these about 2 months ago and have loved using it. I've used it for trotting for barbel and chub on the river teme and for carp up to 12lb on my local pond and I think it's perfect. Well belanced and plenty of power when needed.

Effort equals reward!!
