Bats?

My advice would be to find someone to go fishing with you first. Also a good idea to get the same person to take a trip to the tackle shop with you to pick up the bits you need (and to advise against buying stuff you don't need). Maybe someone ( any Essex boys?) on this site can help.

Well I'm one of the essex boys, but the other side of Essex, and don't know thw romford area very well.

Glouscester park in Basildon is only a short walk from the train station, and not a bad fishery for a beginner (I fished there a bit myself when I was "between cars")

http://www.micktoomer.co.uk/ for more details.

trying a local tackleshop might help, Bowlers in Dagenham I've used a few times, and they always seemed ok, although it was quite some time ago, my wife lived there for a while before we married, I used to nip there to buy bait for Sunday while visting her on Saturday

A look at there where to fish section at http://www.essex-fishing.co.uk/ might also help with venues, although lack of transport is going to be a problem with a lot of them.
