Fishing Patrols

Bottom line is Poland has a thriving angling society so how can just a few hundred thousand poles in the UK decimate the mega stocks of fish we have in the UK in just a couple of years?

270,000 poles registered for work in the UK in 17 months.

One fish dinner per person per week, consisting of 1lb of freshwater fish (live weight) for 2 years = 12,737 metric ton’s of fish.

I suggest you watch the Poland episode of Mat Hayes’s “Lake Escapes to see what impact this can have.

Species caught in 2020: Barbel. European Eel. Bleak. Perch. Pike.

Species caught in 2019: Pike. Bream. Tench. Chub. Common Carp. European Eel. Barbel. Bleak. Dace.

Species caught in 2018: Perch. Bream. Rainbow Trout. Brown Trout. Chub. Roach. Carp. European Eel.

Species caught in 2017: Siamese carp. Striped catfish. Rohu. Mekong catfish. Amazon red tail catfish. Arapaima. Black Minnow Shark. Perch. Chub. Brown Trout. Pike. Bream. Roach. Rudd. Bleak. Common Carp.

Species caught in 2016: Siamese carp. Jullien's golden carp. Striped catfish. Mekong catfish. Amazon red tail catfish. Arapaima. Alligator gar. Rohu. Black Minnow Shark. Roach, Bream, Perch, Ballan Wrasse. Rudd. Common Carp. Pike. Zander. Chub. Bleak.

LOL, Matt Hayes can't catch a fish in a lake the size of texas and of course that means the locals have eaten all the fish!

Come on Ken, you are too intelligent to fall for this kind of rubbish.

As to your numbers........well, you are assuming every pole eats/likes fish, and you are assuming they will all go and take them from lakes/rivers. We both know that isn't the case.

You also quietly neglect to mention the illegal takers of silver fish for baits (both rod or net caught) or the illegal elver netters etc etc. Just seems to me you have a bee in your bonnet about poles.

Nah, I don't have a major bee in my bonnet but I will say that my experiences to date have seen me decide that whist there are some nice folks amongst them, the majority are some of the rudest and most unpleasant individuals I've ever met.

As for the figures, it was you who asked:

how can just a few hundred thousand poles in the UK decimate the mega stocks of fish we have in the UK

I just sourced a baseline figure and did the math.

Species caught in 2020: Barbel. European Eel. Bleak. Perch. Pike.

Species caught in 2019: Pike. Bream. Tench. Chub. Common Carp. European Eel. Barbel. Bleak. Dace.

Wow Ken! :o

Add to that the list of ,

The thousands of pounds that (lets say 2%) of anglers take home for the pot.

The thousands of pounds of fish eaten by cormorants, otters, mink, heron, gulls, grebes, and every other type of predator.

The thousands of fish taken for live and dead baits.

The thousands that die through bad handling.

The thousands that die through over stocking.

The thousands that die through, pollution.

The thousands that die through disease.

And don't forget those that die of old age.

I think we're left with about 3 fish per acre on still waters, and about 10 fish per mile on rivers.

No wonder some people seem to be struggling to catch.

These are just 'ball park' figures of course.;)

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

But what if there are a million eastern Europeans (not just Poles) and they eat fish twice a week, and the fish weight 2lb each?

That's even more! Yikes!

Rabbit, Gozzer and the others denying that there is a problem:

Do poles know that the taking of fish is illegal? YES!

Do they continue to remove them? YES

The poles that started this whole problem where genuinely ignorant of the law. (and as such may be given benefit of the doubt)

The Poles that are doing it today NEVER never fish it alone!! There have been a number of cases where Riparian owners have been thrown in their own waters or challenged by stating there are no signs in Polish, when confronting the rustlers.

Is this the action of "innocent", illegal "fishermen"?

We have Poles on our estate, where I have witnessed people (fellow Poles) coming to the house at night and exchanging a parcel for money. This may be totally be something innocent, but is must be seen as coincidental, do you not agree!

Here in rural Lincolnshire we also have a problem with East Europeans taking fish for the pot but I think its more an ignorance of the law rather than deliberately disobeying it. However this is no excuse and when in this country they have to live by our laws so education is the way forward.

Interestingly, a number of Poles were caught spinning on a local commercial match water. They didn't know they were doing wrong and the local bobbies said that they couldn't be prosecuted because they were no warning signs in Polish ! Hmmm......it could only happen here !

Cheers
