we have the same in our village ken. also we only have the local kids coming round who you all know. if it was going to be a free for all and strangers knocking on the door we would not have put the led pumkin in the window

Haven't had a knock on the door on Halloween in three years. I usually have some individually wrapped sweets in the house in case the local kids come knocking, but I don't put a pumpkin outside.

Locally at least, it seems to be accepted that no pumpkin = don't come calling.

Last year I did get a couple of knocks from older kids with no parents in tow but they were politely told that Halloween is ONE day and not to bother coming until the 30th - strangely, they didn't turn up on the night.

I asked one of my " words with friends " players in the states what happened if you didn't

get lollies/sweets/candy.

She said people who give candy leave their porch light on.

no light you don't knock.

my mind not only wanders-- sometimes it leaves completely.

The roof over my front door is high and dark. I keep on meaning to rig it so I can lower a rubber spider on fishing line from inside the house.

i would love to rig up a ghost to fly down the garden to the gate on a wire .it would give me great joy if it scared poop out of some kids ,but it maybe seen as joining in the fun to any that go home clean so i dont

I always put a few banana skins along the path to the door and a few patches of melted lard. Heard a few good thumps as kids fell on their faces with one breaking their pelvis on the flags....great stuff :).

All,

In the U.S. Halloween is an expression of our gluttony and indulgences for our children. May I say the "porch light" thing works really well. Mild "shock" from scarry homeowners is quite common and well liked by kids. It's been 10 yrs or more since I've seen or heard of destructive behavior by "trick or treaters".

"The Halloween Economy: $2 Billion in Candy, $300 Million in Pet Costumes" (quickly snatched from US News and World Report).

Phone

This year I had "cat eyeballs" for the brave 10yr and ups. Deep in the sack were peeled grapes.

The thing I find really funny is when I hear American Christians (or any other nationality of Christians come to think of it) make the claim that Halloween is "of the Devil". They just don't understand or are not educated in Church history.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.
