as the weather is getting colder i need some advice,i have a pond in my garden and have noticed over the last week it seems to be losing water, which i put down to a hole somewhere,i am hoping that someone out there can advise me on the best way to do this as i dont want to disturb the fish during the pond being emptied but i feel i have no choice. The fish currently in the pond are tench both gold and green, small golden rudd, blue orfes and a few goldfish,i can get hold of a holding tank while i empty the pond but am worried that it may stress the fish out to much, anyone out there with advice on this subject will be a great help to me so look forward to hearing from you hopefully.

Hi ...

First .. Are you sure that it's a hole in your liner ?? Check for leaks in hose and filter connections and any fountain/waterfall problems that may be emptying your pond. One way to check this is to turn all power off to the pond .. and if your level continues to drop then the problem must be with your liner.

If all these OK, let the water settle to its lowest level and this should indicate that the leak is somewhere along that waterline. If the water starts to drop below your fish-keep level, you will have to remove them.

It is far easier to remove fish from six inches of water than a full pond ... less room for the fish to tear about !!

If you have a holding tank avaliable fill it with water from the pond. Install an air pump to keep the water nicely moving and cover the top of the tank with a net to stop the fish jumping out. You will then have the time to sort out your liner problem, and the fish should be fine.

I transferred 17 large Koi over 300 miles .. and kept them in an inflated kids paddling pool for over 5 months whilst I dug out and set up a new pond for them. The fish survived fine !!

Good Luck !! :D:thumbs:

To add to what MrW said, you can buy repair kits for pond liners from most garden or aquarist centres - just imagine an industrial size puncture repair kit that you buy for cycle inner tubes.

If you have a butyl liner and a filter system, I'd put a tenner on the leak being somewhere in the piping....
