impressed with vista

We rebuilt the wife's XP laptop with Vista, and I must say that I'm quite impressed with it. Performance is fine, even with all the bells and whistles turned on, and certain areas that could be a pain in the proverbial in XP now work more slickly; wireless networking support in particular. I like the hibernate option, I (mostly) like the new UI. I also set up a new machine with Vista for my mum, and I really like the way that the restrictive permissions for user accounts work; just like Linux, she gets prompted for the root password if she tries to change anything that she shouldn't change without calling me first ;)

I've tripped up over a few permissioning issues, though. I've a utility I wrote which creates and uses a couple of scratch directories under the directory it's run from. It doesn't work in Vista if installed in Program Files, even when logged in as Admin, because of restrictive permissions on that part of the filesystem.

is the porn on the vista disk as a "service" or is it a seperate install :D

on a seperate 200gb hard drive all of its own, porn drive G:

steve i realy hate the permissions thing, to do a simple task like go to the device manager i think you need to go through about 3 security locks!

its worse than any website with pop ups

I know it's a pain, but it's the way that other "more secure" operating systems do it. Microsoft have just responded to the call from IT professionals to put security ahead of usability in this respect. I expect that most end users prefer it the way that it was, but then moan when as a result they get infested with malware. When it interferes with me doing something, it's annoying. When it stops mum doing something potentially unwise without first calling me, it's a good thing.

i hear what your saying but i cant see it making much difference to be honest, people still click yes, ok to anything that pops up which in most cases is how all the crap hits the fan.

i think ill be looking to disable all of the security warnings there just a complete pest in my books

I bought the XP one Tony, I needed Windows on the Eee as I use it for work and a couple of apps I use only work in Windows.

Jon

Did you convert your Eee PC to XP or did you buy it ready installed? I am running Linux on mine and have had no problems whatever.

It is to be observed that 'angling' is the name given to fishing by people who can't fish.

If GOD had NOT meant us to go fishing, WHY did he give us arms then??

(If you can't help out someone in need then don't bother my old Dad always said! My grandma put it a LITTLE more, well different! It's like peeing yourself in a black pair of pants she said! It gives you a LOVELY warm feeling but no-one really notices!))

I love Vista, I run 4 machines, two with XP (one a lovely new Eee PC 901 :)) one with Vista and one with OSX, The Vista one is by far the most stable, the easiest to use and the most productive. The fastest? Well, yes actually, how faster it may be running XP is something I really can't be bothered to find out as in the real world it matter not a bit.
I thought that too, bit in my real world Adobe Premier is a lead [layer, and it really benefits from the !GB extra free ram that i get with XP. I loved Vista at first, but my machine is much quicker all round with XP.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

I never use Premier, I have a Toughbook that runs Avid Express and only Avid Express, that uses XP, but then again it doesn't run on Vista, and I forgot to include it in my original machine count :)

Nearly another week has gone by and i'm even more impressed. Upgrade on works as well appears to make my life even easier. Can't really see the point in buying a quicker, easier to use computer then go backwards with old progammes, drivers etc, i even like me new printer, compared with the one that isn't broke but wont run on vista. It's still for sale to the guys who run xp, cost of two pints of beer, who wants it. The vista machines have been built to accomodate the more intricate software. If all that is required is a faster machine, can't it be upgraded, was a lower speck machine bought in the first place? To date i don't think i have had too many of these promts, asking for permission so i can't really see that a major issue.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

You get more bang for your buck running XP, with Vista you are losing up to a gig of ram, just for the 'pleasure' of running Vista.

That's just twaddle barry, sorry. What do you mean by more 'intricate'? I run the same software as I always have and it all works better under XP. My laptop is as 'upgraded' as it can be, the only way that I could get any more oomph out of it was to install XP. I've got a couple of my clients and friends to downgrade to XP. None are itching to go back to Vista, especially those who run Photoshop and or Premiere.
