Info needed,

Cam belt has gone on my wifes car, which is a Ford Fiesta Classic Diesel 1996 (N reg)

Do you think this is a garage job?

or

A repair someone can do following the haynes manual, if I can find one...

PS:- Would the failure of the cam belt have caused other damage, ie: valves going through pistons....etc

your guidance would be much appreciated...

It's very possible that valves or pistons have been damaged - not a certainty though. Did you or your wife notice a loud banging sound when the belt broke or did the engine just stop suddenly?

Would help to know in what circumstances the belt broke, I had one go once when I was reversing slowly off the drive, I was going so slow that there was no damage at all, That's unusual though.

Give us more info and we can tell you how pessimistic to be!

You need to find out if its an interference engine or not

If it is then in all probability there will be a lot of damage, I'd be surprised if its a non interference engine as I seem to remember this one being a high revving engine with short strokes and higher compression

Hiya,

I'm pretty sure you have the same engine I'm using on my boat, the 1800 cc one. I snapped a timing belt a couple of years ago, the engine was only running at tick over but still managed to snap the cam shaft into three bits :(

many thanks for your replies,

it is an 1800cc diesel,

When it happened, she was just pulling away from a junction, she heard no unusual noises, car just stopped, but she tried to re-start it, now the engine will not even turn over on the ignition.

can I tell if its an interference engine or not by looking in the engine compartment?

Sounds like an interference engine, when the timing is out the valves will hit the pistons ( interference)

From what you've described it seems as if the pistons have clouted the valves and either embedded themselves in the crown of the piston or the con rods have bent

It will be cheaper to get hold of another engine from a breakers yard rather than repair it

Sorry to hear that melpen. If you intend to keep the car, you can (as has already been pointed out) try to get one from a breakers (but then you don't know what condition the engine was in before the car was scrapped) or you could get a reconditioned engine or even a short-block.
