volvo failed its MOT on spongy brakes friday (pleased it was so little)

any way bled all the brakes in the correct sequence....... exactly the same!

new master cylinder and re bled...... exactly the same

4 new flexible front hoses (ouch) and re bled ...exactly the same

no leaks anywhere checked again today.

all caliper pistons fine and moving etc

2.5 ltres of fluid wasted any ideas?

ps brand new disks and pads all round pre mot! installed with new piston dust seals and pad pins and anti rattle springs

servo fine as the brakes are rock solid before the engine is turned on and the servo assists the pedal then sinks two inches or more with pressure!

the servo one way valve is fine

old volvo are known for front brake hoses falling apart internally hence all were replaced

servo on firewall ,bled nearside rear ,front NS top ,front OS top, rear OS ,front offside 2 lower together ,front NS 2 lower together

handbrake seperate to hydraulic brakes its merely a parking brake using shoes on the rear disks inside the hub

I'm no mechanic but as a motorcyclist I get to change brake pads a lot. I've noticed that they tend to be a bit spongy for a while after fitting new pads. If you've fitted all new pads just before the MOT they might never have had the chance to bed in.

they definately havent as the car only went 300 yards on them ,my thought too but i'm just following the advice of the MOT tester who ofcourse decides what passes and what doesent but the brakes are definately spongy i noticed it myself but work perfectly IMHO

Check whether it has a Brake load sensor at the rear Chesters, Its not uncommon for some of them to trap air, which unless you specifically bleed the BLS, refuses to budge with conventional methods.

To check whether new pads are causing your problem, clamp off both front flexys, then check the brake pedal. Actually its not a bad idea to diagnose the area of the problem by clamping flexys first at the front & if nothing changes the problems at the rear, & vica versa.

Peter.

The loose lines gone..STRIKE.
