Carp Record Gone?

But at least Walker found that fish, developed the tackle, even designed the rod, credit where it's due.

There are several certainties in life, one being that Christmas comes but once a year, bit like the carp record, and that we will all eventually die. There can be few coarse fish records that are as predictable as the carp one, hence it's possibly the most devalued and least interesting record, outside carp circles, in our sport!

Peter, whilst I've agreed with some of your comments in the past about carp fishing I can't in this instance.

The carp record has stood since 2008. What's more, there are now several fish that could beat the record, so it's certainly no longer as predictable as it used to be. Indeed, Wingham may even break the record in a few years.

Steve, eight years, I stand corrected, how time flies. However, see your own comment, and I bet that they all have names!!

I believe Dick Walker started that as well

I often wonder what Walker would think of today's carp industry? Would he approve? Maybe, maybe not.

I think you've used a word that would have made him disapprove Peter, "industry". When the worth of a fish is calculated in pounds and pence, as well as pounds and ounces, it goes against what I believe to be the essence of angling.

As for 'records' in general, they are only for the benefit of angling, and have little value as a scientific record of potential fish maximum sizes.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

John

I can understand your dislike of and frustration with waters around you being stocked with massive numbers of carp, to the detriment of the natural fish. I don't understand the immediate dislike of everything to do with carp though.

If I sit in a bivvie for days on end, with my rods on bite alarms then as long as I am fishing for Bream or Tench or just about anything then I am a top specimen fisher and the pictures of me wearing a floppy hat and showing my latest specimen will be displayed on these pages and widely applauded. If however I sit in the same bivvie for days on end with the same rods on the same bite alarms fishing for carp then I am a beer swilling, dope smoking noddie whose pictures on here will be ignored or derided.

There is an immense amount of snobbery on here on occasions.

Business people sell what sells. If, at the moment, that is carp gear then it doesn't make the carp industry any better or worse than the barbel industry or possibly the Bream industry. Possibly just a bit bigger.

As for record fish, they mean nothing to be honest, except as a possible representation of the effort that had often gone into producing them. That should be applauded, whatever the species.

Agreed!

To all who think catching such a fish is easy or worthless, try it and see how you do ;)

The fact it's a record is of no interest to me, but it's still impressive, in the same way any carp from that water would be.

Ok, this is my third and last attempt at replying on this thread.

Dave, you seen to be under the impression that I am totally against carp/carp angling, a misconception shared by many more on here. I've posted, more times than I can remember, that this is not the case. Nowhere in my post do I state that, or decry the effort needed to catch the fish.

I am anti overstocking, or creating 'fisheries' that are 'species specific', whatever that species maybe. I am against waters that are adapted/created with the needs of the angler being the main concern, with little or no regard to the 'balance' of species, and the effect on the surrounding flora/fauna, and the eco system in general.

When you mention the needs of 'business', that's the 'industry' that both Peter and I mention. While I understand that money is needed to 'manage' a fishery, I don't believe that the managing should put the needs of the angler first. This often happens with 'fisheries, created with mainly carp, and/or 'exotic' alien species in mind.

Apart from the effect on my local fisheries by the overstocking of carp of all sizes, the placing of carp on a level above other species is so ridiculous, and negative towards most other species. This is so bad that fishing for carp is now regarded by many, as a separate discipline, and other species are merely regarded as 'silvers'. While I realise that this a marketing ploy, sadly it's believed by many. Carp are just another coarse fish to me, and always will be.

In regard to rod caught records, they are mainly an ego thing, or an advert for the fishery concerned. They only record the biggest fish caught at specific times, in permitted areas, by legal methods, and meeting other criteria. It is of little if any scientific value in giving an account of the size fish can grow to in the wild. This brings me back to carp, regardless of how many hundreds of hours/days and angler spends on researching, and actually fishing, it's generally regarded that the next record will be a 'known' fish, from a hand full of 'specialised' waters. It saddens me to think of the line of anglers waiting with wads of cash, just to have an attempt to catch one of these fish, a few ounces above it's last weighing. I felt the same when the 'Traveller' farce was playing out.

I'm not against carp, or carp fishing, only against the 'carp machine' that has steamrollered it's way through angling over the last few decades, to the detriment of fisheries, and the indigenous species there in.
