Carp Record Gone?

Yes, I'm sorry John. It wasn't meant to be addressed specifically at you. maybe I shouldn't have started it "john"

The problem is that if you want to catch the biggest fish you have to fish the venues that contain the biggest fish and when the fish get to this size then they are very few and far between.

I enjoy carp fishing (along with many other forms of fishing) but have to confess to feeling a bit picked on from time to time.

Maybe I shouldn't be so sensitive.

I've noticed that among many 'carp anglers' Dave. Even when something is said in jest, it's often taken as a slur on their angling preference. I do take the mick about certain forms of angling, especially those that border on obsessive behaviour, but I can understand it to an extent, I had a similar obsession, that lasted several years, about chasing a 2lb roach.

I've always said, that if you are happy with your angling, then why worry what others think? I get some stick, from some quarters, for not being interested in fishing for carp, as if I'm sad, or not 'into' angling enough. Some just can't understand my indifference, but I just put that down to inexperience in most cases.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I am lucky enough to have carp fished before "carp" angling was seen as normal and those that fished at night seen as weird.

I love this modern camping at the bank and had my mrs not had her problems would still be camping as much as possible.

Trouble is though my idea of angling has become obsolete in these modern time and only but a few still put watercraft before technology

I fished for carp but now it seems fishing is old hat and tricking fish using tech is the norm so much the fish catch themselves and the angler himself only comes into action at the last instance .

Got nothing against tech i had herons as soon as i could afford them ,a bivvy when it was called an umbrella but instead of braid several times the weight of the fish in breaking strain and boats that do all the work and rods i only ever saw on a beach i wonder what fun is left in carp fishing except to escape the rat race and join the tackle race

Its strange carp anglers are about ,in our 24 hour matches far greater weight of carp are caught ,not camping ,not uusing beach rods and not using self hooking rigs than most carp anglers catch in a year but i guess in the carper eyes po,es are seen as cheating and not sleeping some sort of selfish custom true carpers would never do incase the word got around they could really fish

Has the day of the all round angler gone and specialising become the easy opt out to stop others seeing the shortfalls in actual angling in this modern age

I don't know anything about the state of modern carp fishing in the UK. There wasn't too much going on in the Scottish highlands before I left, too far North.

As for tech, the only tech thing I use are my old Fox bite alarms. I am not a great lover of bait boats. I feel that casting is an intergral skill within fishing and so if I cant cast to a fish then I don't fish for it. Baiting up will be done, if at all, with a spod or if, as is likely, I am fishing closer in, then with a old scoop fixed with duct tape to a broken piece of landing net handle.

Rods are home made on Conoflex 1.75 TC fibreglass blanks most of the time and hookbait is more likely to be a tigernut or worm than a boilie. I also tend not to fish on very commercial carp fisheries, of which there are many in France. I prefer the low key French owned ponds which can contain a surprising selection of fish and are usually less than half the price of the UK carper orientated lakes from the likes of Angling lines. The only thing I do like though is a dent toilet and shower and somewhere to keep the phone / tablet charged

As an example, six of us are going to spend a week on a 7.5 acre lake near Le Mans in Sept. Carp up to 50lb and Sturgeon up to the same sort of size. We have the lake to ourselves for a little over £100.00 each. (There is one place available for anyone who fancies it. Gozzer?)

Maybe I am not a proper Carpiste, to me it is just fishing.

Thanks, but no thanks Dave. I could never go fishing with an improper carpiste. :nono:

Besides, it's a struggle trying to avoid carp locally, without travelling a few hundred miles to try and do the same.

That reminded me of my struggles to avoid carp on the River Murray in Australia. Almost impossible unless you stick to lure fishing.

Having read so much about the native Australian percids, I was not too happy to be confronted with a carp puddle several hundred miles long !

I did manage to get callop and trout-cod from the Murray, but it was damned hard work amongst the wall-to-wall carp !

This made me go and catch up on what's going on at wingham via the website - good grief Steve! What an amazing year again. It would be amazing if a future record came from there...

(There may be/have been a record bream, we just couldn't catch it!)

Thanks, Andrew.

Wingham Carp Lake has now produced 5 different 50s to 59-08. The only one I stocked is the smallest of these; the others were born at Wingham and so have plenty of years of growth ahead.

The average age of the carp in the Main Lake is even younger, but the first 50 came out last year. So far with almost no carp fishing until very recently it's already produced 11 different 40s.

There's still a chance of a record bream, and I'm hoping I'll have more time to try for it this year.

It may even come out at next week's Fish-In!

I actually enjoy watching these Urban Anglers video's catching Carp in Docks rubbish strewn Rivers, Park Ponds and the like, it reminds me of my youth fishing such places around Bristol and Bath, to far more rewarding than the commercials or syndicate waters. A clip I saw recently by 'The London Angler' targeted Barbel in London, walking past the crack heads, rubbish and everything else, his mate contacted a good double figure Barbel that looked 'mint'. Note to self... I must give the Severn in Gloucester a go, apparently this tidal stretch hold a good few Barbel and Carp.

Also the River Severn hold some cracking Carp, fit things that are a real treat to catch, that's the sort of fishing I find inspiring, but each to their own.
