That's a Highland Cattle Steer Newt. Very common in Scotland and a very friendly breed. When I went into the field to take the photo I had about eight of them all around me licking my clothes and trying to chew the brass button off my jacket. They probably thought they were going to be fed.

My wife is Scottish (but not rural) - they're all coos!

Tell her that coos have tits, bulls have balls and stirks are ex-bulls.

I don't think she's be keen on getting close enough to tell!

Nor would the dog, for that matter - the other year in Devon we were eating at a picnic table next to a field of bullocks, and he was giving it the big woo-woo-woo at them. Bullocks, being bullocks, decided to wander over and have a look at what all the noise was. At which point the big brave dog shut his trap and tried to hide behind me :lol:
