The problem is, if you let fisherman land fish he isn't supposed to land (discards) and offer him a price for them then guess what, he will fish for the fish he is not supposed to fish for, land them and claim that they are by catch and sell them.

With regard to conservation, most fishermen are their own worst enemy, and always have been.

Their attitude is " catch it while it's available, it might not be there tomorrow" He might be right.

That sounds just like New Zealand.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

There is one solution you land everything you catch which will go against your overall quota zero discards increase mes sizes for less mortality amoung small fish any tampering with nets a severe fine or your license revoked but you try to put that into practice and then you have a prawn fisherie which use very small meshes to in the codend to catch the prawns then resulting in catching undersized fish its all mad and you can have vast amounts prawn boats trawling .

Discards were massive problem in the early days fishermen were asked to put mess sizes up but it was met with fierce opposition because different sectors of the industry wanted to target different fish boats targeting haddock and whiting to catch whiting you needed small meshes results in high discards not anymore as there isnt the high discards to catch job done I think fishermen have now realised big meshes on cod ends is the only way to go 40 years to late .

. Many don't seem to know that the by-catch and discard policy of the EU CFP are based on the Icelandic and Norwegian models.

since when? show us what evidence you have or invented.

Why have the e u dictated that the u k anglers must discard the bass. On what model is that based on.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

And importantly, rules and strategies that work in the north sea or north Atlantic will be unacceptable to those fishing the Mediterranean and having a large inflexible bureaucracy involving multiple governments makes responding to the changing needs of the fishery painfully slow - which is why the fishery in the north sea was close to collapse before the EU was able to address the overfishing and discards issue.

Barry,

not a bad try phone, the first umpteen paragraphs confirmed that discard is bad and what the e u management is up to at present is also bad and the only piece of comfort gleaned from the rest of the paragraphs is that local knowledge is king and to adjust the gear to suit with recommendations from the guys on the coal face who are actually doing it. only had time to scan it quickly sorry. next time abridge the war and peace section for us all. B)

Two examples I have seen previous in the u k is the north sea a net developed by the errrrmmmmm british called the eliminator net for the cod and haddock. b c will agree with me 'cough' that the advance in technical measures has been good news.

And the other one has been a development in beam trawling nets and gear down the south west that get's rid of massively the junk and small fish they pick up and in a mixed fishery sorting out the wheat from the chaff can only be a step forward for the industry and the stock.

here's the latest from the e u regarding the u k and fishing responsibility.

The quisling labour mep's have voted down the u k gaining control of it's own waters back using international law of the sea in favour of the e u management remaining in control of u k waters.

And technical gear again where the e u ignore the opportunity to allow the small fish the chance to breed. that's discard phone. E u management at it's best.

Barry,

Unfortunately, Americans are all to familiar with "discards". A sloppy bunch we are. If only our concern was to have them (fish) grow larger, now that would make sense. We "discard" the GDP of the continent of Africa every day. (phone fact)

I posted that piece mostly because of the DATE. This past month of this year. Just wondering if it 'predicted' changes in the wind.

Barry the eleminator net was designed in New England USA not England that was 11 years ago I know this because I remember the lads telling me when they did he trials with the net on Whitby trawler Our Lass and Jubilee Quest from Grimsby off the Yorkshire coast for Cefas in 2007 an excellent net for catching whiting and haddock but very poor for cod as the net fished better for species off the bottom rather than those species ie cod which are close to the bottom .

The net also occurred less damage from towing the net over rocky ground which made it more financially better and as well with discards were down with the eliminator net on whiting and haddock but as the lads told me it was very poor for catching cod which is there main target fish to them it was not good but to boats targeting whiting and haddock ? and the net was designed in New England USA which is a long long way from England next you will be telling everybody it was designed in France or the Spain ?only joking bas ?.

Any net which improves fish mortality is a good thing but dumping in large quantities of good fish still goes on today which in this day and age should not be happening but its money money big money at that.

All the time large fish have a premium over small the more chance small are dumped to allow room for the large once they're caught
