We'll see.

We have Spain's election o 28 April and Vox are looking to do well and then we will have the EU parliament elections in May. There will be a few chess pieces moved before that happens but we can confidently expect a very strong showing from Lega and other parties standing for national sovereignty.

The undemocratic EU has elections?

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

The undemocratic EU has elections?

It does. They're a sham because MEPs don't have the power to propose, amend or repeal legislation (all of that falls to the unelected and largely unaccountable European Commssion) but the elections do give the plebs the illusion of control and provide an interesting litmus test for public opinion while the authoritarian juggernaut rumbles on, riding roughshod over peoples liberty and freedoms..

Thank you for providing an opportunity to explain political reality in the run-up to the poll.

The Parliament has three main powers:

  • The power to legislate. This power is shared with the Council of the European Union. In most situations, European laws are made by a co-decision procedure. This means that the Council and the Parliament jointly adopt law. The Parliament can make amendments to legislation under this procedure. However, there are certain important areas, for example, tax legislation, where the Parliament may only give an opinion as to whether a proposed piece of legislation can become law.

from your link, as I said:

The ordinary legislative procedure gives the same weight to the European Parliament and the Council of the European
Union on a wide range of areas (for example, economic governance, immigration, energy, transport, the environment and consumer protection). The vast majority of European laws are adopted jointly by the European Parliament and the Council.

The codecision procedure was introduced by the Maastricht Treaty on European Union (1992), and extended and made more effective by the Amsterdam Treaty (1999). With the Lisbon Treaty that took effect on 1 December 2009, the renamed ordinary legislative procedure became the main legislative procedure of the EU´s decision-making system.

It does seem a bit strange to be talking about the democratic process in Europe when you look at the mess in Westminster

The dogs breakfast that the Westminster government has made of Brexit is a matter of national disgrace but your extracted text doesn't alter the fact that the European parliament is a toothless tiger, It can't propose legislation and although it can request revisions, the commission has the power to ignore those requests and in true EU fashion, if the European parliament is so bold as to reject a proposal outright, the commission just keeps submitting it again until they vote the "right way" - sound familiar?

About the only real power that they theoretically wield is the ability to dismiss the commission in its entirety but to my knowledge, that has never been done.

Ken,

That's a Cod response from you.

cut and paste - germaine to my point progressive social and environmental governance will always sooth the masses. Keeping score with material wealth will NOT - never has worked. It produces a pyramidal conclusion with diminishing incentive.

"Switzerland is No. 1, followed by No. 2 Canada, as countries with more progressive social and environmental policies dominate the overall rankings. Nordic nations –Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway – rank in the top 15 overall. Denmark is the No. 1 country for raising children and for women.Jan 23, 2018"

Hot off the press:

Some 23 people have so far been arrested as a result of yesterday’s unrest, which included pitched battles involving the police, numerous fires being set alight and all-out carnage – mostly in the Copenhagen district of Nørrebro, but also in other areas of the Danish capital.

The trouble started on Sunday afternoon when Nørrebro locals and counter-demonstrators took issue with a protest organised by the fierce Islam critic Rasmus Paludan.

Our councils can also ignore any public "consultations" they hold if it contradicts their agenda ,theres democracy and what the government call democracy

Some years ago waverley council had a consultation whether all council houses should be transferrerd to a new housing association ,the resulting response was no! (By a very high margin) the council got upset with this result (must be brown envelopes somewhere) so declared fine but any council houses becoming vacant WILL be transferred to this new association ,in essense ignoring the tenants and doing what they please ,although a consultation in this matter was compulsory its results can be ignored!

The council can proudly say the public was consulted but hide the fact whatever they said was ignored

Councils do exactly what they want even if they have a consultation or objections are made by the public my wifes good friend has had a fish and chip restaurant trading for over 30 years and a Large fish and chip chain decided to take the Natwest bank which recently closed which is right next door to turn into a fish and chip restaurant which would seat over 200 there was over 500 objections but as always brown envelopes win over .
