Yes, the UKIP results were disappointing, although it's interesting to note that they made headway in the industrial heartlands and ousted Labour in Alvaston.

For Britain also won seats for the first time and the spoilt ballots tell an interesting story too.

Interesting that you didn't mention Labour's performance though Paul - are you considering a switch to the Greens or Lib-Dems yet?

Really?

When did we leave the EU?

I've been trying to find breakdowns of the results by votes cast rather than by seats won on a first past the post basis but haven't had much luck so far.

It's interesting that neither the Labour Party not the Conservatives even seem to be setting out their stalls for the EU elections at the end of the month.

I broke a promise to myself and went to vote on Thursday. I asked the people manning the station what the turn out had been so far, after 8 hours it was less than 6%. I know the majority of voters go late afternoon and evening, but even they were surprised how low it had been. I haven't been able to find the actual turn out figures, but if ours are anything to go by, then I'd guess it's low. According to those I have spoken to since the election, the number of spoiled papers will be higher than normal too.

With this in mind I had to chuckle at the Greens and LibDems, crowing about a resurgence in voters.

I'm waiting for the May 23rd showing, if we haven't left before then. UKIP may be dead in the water, but Paul and Daves mate Nigel has another bite of the cherry, and they are 9 points in the lead as of today.

Unfortunately, I couldn't bring myself to vote for my local UKIP council candidate as he has shown himself to be a man of rather poor integrity.

Again, the acid test is not the number of seats won or lost but the number of votes cast. A few individual districts have published figures but I have yet to se one with a UKIP candidate and it's difficult to get an overview.

Are you in favour of proportional representation ken .

And today Ian Duncan Smith is calling for Teresa May to go now as she is hopeless but I do remember very well IDS as Tory leader between 2001 to 2003 he was also hopeless as the Tory leader and seems to be throwing stones in glass houses .

Broadly yes.

68% of the votes cast in the last general election didn't count for anything and that's a problem.

PR isn't without it's flaws though and although there are various versions of it, none of them are perfect.

It can make governance difficult but perhaps it's biggest flaw is that you vote for a party and the party picks the MPs. That makes it very difficult for the public to send the message that they don't like particular representatives - although as Blair proved with Mandelson, the current system is no defence against having unpopular, unelected, slimeballs with their hands on the reigns of power.

Of course, it does mean that some fairly odious people will get a platform and a voice but if that's the price of representation in a democracy then so be it. If anybody is upset by hearing opinions that differ from their own, they can go and have a cry.

As for the replacement for Treason May....

Perhaps they should try a conservative for a change.
