Hi I have a 7 foot allcock "the light caster " spinning rod, made in hexaganal split cane, I picked this up at a boot fair last year for £2, I have not used it as yet but was thinking of taking it out with an old Hardy fixed spool.

Anyone know any thing about this rod, age dates made etc... Looks to be a quality rod

Cheers

1950 something. A perfectly able rod for 15gm to 25gm lures. Had some good pike on mine, great fun!!

This rod is listed in my 1949 Allcocks Anglers Guide... Below is some of the blurb promoting the rod from the catalogue.

"West Country", the well known angling author, writing on low water salmon fishing in "The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News" said of the "Light Caster" - "The rod to me is the Eighth Wonder of the World, and is equal of any rod at any price I have ever handled."

The "Light Caster" Rod, 7 foot long and weighing only 6½ ozs. was designed by us for trout spinning but such is its amazing strength that scores of anglers are now using it for salmon.

The photograph depicts a Canadian angler who has just landed a 28lb lake trout on one of these little rods, fishing from the float of his seaplane.

A.255 The "Light Caster" suitable for spinning with fixed spool reels such as the "Allcock-Stanley", "Superb", "Duco" etc. Thousands of these rods have been sold in the past and the demand today is greater than ever before. Seldom can any pattern have given such universal satisfaction.

Specification: 2 joint, built cane, solid cork handle, reinforced serrated suction ferrules. Agatine rings throughout (extra large butt ring), screw reel fitting, rubber button, partitioned bag. Weight (approx) 6½ozs, 7ft. 105/-each

Thanks For the info, some great stuff, I could not find any info by googling it.

Its intresting in the 1949 artical it say thousands have been sold, indicating it was first sold at an earlier date.

Mr Google tells me that Davis Tackle in Xchurch have one for sale for £85, they are dating it from the 1930s.

I have two lightcasters, one earlier rod with a small butt ring for centrepin/multiplier use and a later model with a larger butt ring for fixed spool use. I use both regularly, they are very competent rods with a lovely action. I guess that they are probably capable of landing fish well into double figures. I use the later one with an Allcock's Delmatic fixed spool for my chub spinning on the Teme, great fun!

Eating wild caught fish is good for my health, reduces food miles and keeps me fit trying to catch them........it's my choice to do it, not yours to stop me!
