Where did the term coarse fishing derive from ?

Hey Guys... I've been fishing all my life both here in the US and in England where I grew up. I have always wanted to know where the term "Coarse fishing" came from. Any one have any idea ? I have never heard it called that in the US... they just refer to it as freshwater fishing.

Thanks

God Bless

"Game" fishing was for trout, salmon, etc. and was for the gentry.

Other fish were considered beneith them but fine for the lower classes; thus 'coarse'.

In the States, we use game fish (not the same criteria though), pan fish, and trash fish.

The term applies to the perceived "coarsness" of the flesh of non-salmonid freshwater fish - a perception that is not wholly true.

Minnow, gudgeon, perch and zander are delicious - but I will say no more or the coneys will come out to get me!

Hey Newt... Vagabond...

Thanks... sounds right to me... and would seem to make sence.

Funny how things change from across the pond. In England you are considered an "Angler of worth" if you can catch the elusive carp. In America the carp are considered trash fish by most, if not all fisherman, with the possible exception of a few Fly fishers who have found out about their fighting abilities. As I understand it the Carp were first introduced here from Europe as a food source. They were considered a "Hardy" fish that could withstand various types of water and temperature conditions. Their meat is white and fleshy, a lot like Cods in fact...and when prepared properly is very good. They are however, viewed here in the US with some distain... never understood that myself.

Hey Vagabond... when I lived in England there were not too many... if any... people eating freshwater fish. I have learned since living in America that Perch, Bluegill, Redear, Crappie and Walleye (your Zander) are incredible eating. Gimme some Bluegills in beer batter and fried potatoes and I'm in heaven... only thing better than eating them is catching them.

Disdain?? You should read some of the comments between us and the Brits on youtube!

Just search carp throwing. Disgusting to do to any creature but certainly not uncommon (apparently)

for carp.

And there was I thinking it referred to the language of the anglers concerned!

True in your case, Peter :P

I was once asked to write a reference for a mate who wanted to join my fishing club

It began, "Fred Boggis, who is a lecherer in biology, is the coarsest fisherman I know"

He got in!
