That's a whole lot of No. 8s they must be eating. Surely they've checked their stomach contents before assuming it's anything to do with anglers?

Will shooting be allowed to continue?

Of course if this is accurate, we must hold our hands up and address the problem. Nobody wants to be responsible for swans (or any other creature) dying.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

This is really bad, and reflects badly on the entire angling scene, I can't believe that some anglers are still leaving behind lead and line on the watershore ... After all that has been done to prevent this in the specialised press everywhere. We should ban them from fishing altogether, putting them on a blacklist and not grant them permits, fishing licenses, etc. Same goes for leaving litter behind in my opinion, coke cans, food, packages for terminal tackle, etc. A disgrace!

A few lies being told here I suspect, either that or someone is selling lead shot again.

It would appear from the posts of anderoo and flemdike, that they are not aware that the sale of lead shot has been banned for many years in UK.

I have sent an email to Councillor Clee.

The Swan Rescue Centre need to be VERY careful. As anglers, we don't use lead that is likely to harm swans. However, as anglers, we probably alert organisations like them to sick swans more than any other group.

If they continue to accuse anglers, I can see that stopping.

Why don' we email the Swan rescue centre and ask them to justify their remarks when anglers have been using lead free alternatives for ovwer twenty years

you can find a contact for them on: http://www.wychboldswanrescue.co.uk/page8.htm

If they were not such gluts and pests they wouldn't die, they are a naturally greedy, inquisitive and bully of an animal. I have seen a swan attack an angler on a still water from 'shoo-ing' it away for its own safety as he was fishing on the drop and he didnt want the bird grabing the hook bait by mistake (so he informed me)

wait wait wait, dip, strike, net, wait wait wait.....

Sent this to the editor of the newspaper

"Lead shot has been banned in angling since 1986, and has not been sold since so you should get your reporters to check their facts before making emotive statements. If the lead is still on the river bed after 22 years maybe there is something wrong with the river environment causing the swans to eat anything. Banning angling will not solve the problem. What it will do is take away the many eyes that keep a close watch on river quality and report incidents swiftly to the Environment Agency."

May get published but I am not holding my breath as common sense tends to take a back seat to emotive headlines these days

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not
