I know its been said a few times before but don;t get caught out!

At night at Wingham in the spring I always change into thermals to sleep in and have slept in coat, hat and scarf before now. If you assume you are going chubbing in december you will be dressed about right, you can always take layers off if you get too hot!

Also I always take two sleeping bags and sleep inside both if its very cold or leave them open if its milder.

Trust me the worst thing in the world is being freezing at 3am!

Also I would highly reccomend taking a few spare torches / headtorches. Its very easy to mislay one in the dark (why are they always black?) also before now I have been so excited by a run I've sprinted out leaving the torch behind or dropped one in the river, I now always keep a spare by the rods!

Final final tip get yourself a large external battery pack for charging you mobile on the bank. Mine charges my phone 4 or 5 times before it gives up!

This a newer version with a high capacity than mine!

Excellent advice from Rich apart from one thing. The worst thing in the world at 3 am is having a run especially if you have not got much on.

Alas the boilie is no more.and unfortunately I have no Wingham water to wash one out and prepare another one. To clarify the colour of the boilie it was an orange 10mm topped with a white 10mm pop up

I hope that Dales is fishing opposite because the bombardment is like the opening scene from Gladiator. With a few pyrotechnics it would be spectacular

Point of order rule 22b states that fish only count if you have markered and spodded bait out yourself.............Rusty

And a reminder for those who, like me, don't usually fish with more than two rods - if you're going to fish three at Wingham, you'll need to get a second short term rod licence.

Hello there carpmeister, I seem to remember you had a habit of running out in the middle of the night in a distressing state of undress, in order to land a succession of carp... I hope you've been clothes shopping since then? ;)

(Maybe even splashed out on a new boilie :) )

EDIT: I think that's why Steve often tucks you away in Tim's Point.

Ha Ha, i bet you are right about the colour of that boilie.

At the moment I don't know which lake i will be on whether eels on the pond or Tench/Perch on the main lake. So not sure on tactics and bait as yet but have ordered 3 pots of dendras and 1 of lobs from Steve which I could use on both.

I have never been afraid to put a lot of bait in and a lot of my good catchs have come after heavy feeding. However, I would not recommend that to anyone who has not fished it before.

For the last few seasons I have tried harder to fish differently being more accurate and using less bait with mixed results but last year I went back to lots of feed and got by first double figure Tench after a heavy bombardment.

I also had 100+ Perch and around 15 Tench on another weekend when I fed stupidly heavy.

I think heavy feeding is a decent tactic for Wingham and also gives you a shout at a Bream but I bet its cold at the moment and it could be very easy to over feed. But saying that if I am on the main lake then I would pile in the maggots and worms and go all out for the Perch as I think they have come on a lot over the last few seasons and on the right day the Perch fishing can be trully awsome.

Oh, and if you get a big eel do land it tail first. Failure to do so cost me a PB last week!

Ouch, that does not sound good.

Yes I'm having a bit of a wobble about what to do now. I was just going to tench fish with little bolt rigs/fake baits but now as the weekend gets closer and we have a better ides of conditions, I'm thinking maybe fishing in a way that would catch perch is a better choice. With a running rig and maggots/worms you'll pick up tench as well as perch, but not the other way around.

So maybe I should be getting more maggots and worms and changing it all around... If the perch haven't spawned they will be huge.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

I have often found that when I have targeted the Perch and it works and you catch a few Perch you often start to catch a few Tench mixed in with them. It can be to easy to settle in to setting traps with bolt rigs on big waters but the more active method of constant feeding and castingcan get you a nice mixed bag.

I have never been able to just catch the big fish and so I dont mind playing a numbers game as for me the bigger fish have come mixed in with smaller ones and so even if I am catching the smaller Tench and Perch I still think I have a shout at a bigTench.
