Am I too far gone, to ever return?

I had one of those 13ft JW avons. the build quality wasn't a patch on the early versions of the JW avon and it was tip heavy and floppy when used at 13ft

Mat

I had a couple and they were a genuine through action but very floppy, the guides were naff and the reel holders were shyte also....nice color blank though, and I did like the long white quivertip.

I got shut of 'em :).

I have a pair of the deluxe models that I use when dual rod general ledgering (on a pod) without the extension to 13ft and only used the solid tops (not quivers that came supplied).

By the sounds of it the extensions and quivers can stay where they are! :)

As most will know, my angling days have been very few and far between this last few years. This has been partially through, ill health, and a general disillusionment with the coarse angling scene. I haven't cast a line in anger for about 2yrs now, or been in a tackle shop/store. Since I retired last year, and with the help of my GP, my health is much better, and I was planning to make June 16th my 'come back' date.

With this in the back of my mind, I went to the opening of a new 'Go Outdoors' store in Leeds. My, or I should say my wifes, main reason was a free discount card, and at least an extra 15% of the discount card price.

I wandered off to look at what tackle they had on offer, not a great selection, but enough to occupy myself with, while my wife and daughter took in the rest of the store. A guy came and asked if I wanted any help, I declined, "just browsing". When I started looking closer at the gear, I noticed that about 60% was carp related, the other 40% made up of general coarse, spinning/predator, fly fishing, sea fishing, with a bit of cross over stuff, bags, nets etc. These proportions were roughly what I expected so no surprise there. As I looked round I started to feel uneasy, out of place, not 'at home' as I always used to be when surrounded by tackle, and in the company of other anglers. I couldn't settle, and when the assistant came back to ask how I was doing, I said I was looking at rods and reels for 'general/mixed' coarse fishing, and that I wasn't into the 'carp scene'. "Oh, you must be a match angler then", he said, pointing at some pellet wagglers in the rack. "No, I said I'm not into carp", I said. He stared at me as if I had just uttered the sentence in Chinese, completely puzzled. I just shook my head, said "Never mind", and went off to find my wife.

I thought about it for a while after, and apart from the reaction of the assistant, and the choice of gear, I couldn't explain the uneasy feeling, the feeling of being in an almost 'alien' place.

I'm almost too scared to try a proper tackle shop, (if I can find one), in case that feeling is still there with me.

John.

Don't worry about what others think and if you can't find a tackle shop, browse for gear on-line and find what you like. There are 'non-carp' anglers about the place and so is tackle for them!

Hi Gozzer,

Like you I have suffered a few health problems, thumping heart, dodgy eyesight and now shakes in one hand. It was hard giving up match fishing, but did, knowing that I was giving so much away to the young'ns, not wanting to enter a match without being in with a chance, having been collecting off of also rans for 30 years.

There is plenty of good tackle at car boot sales, going for very little, or the Bay at a bit more. All my gear is pretty old, although good stuff in the day. Tackle shops have to cater for the Carp man, or die. In my area of Berks, most have gone out of business.

My answer was to go out and fish with traditional baits, bread punch, sweet corn and good old worms from the compost heap. I was fishing yesterday at a nice little lake with a mixed head of fish. I heard today that the committee have decided to net out the "small fish" to stock with carp. Progress! This was my blog of a pleasant afternoon there. http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/braybrooke-community-fishing-lake-rewards-a-visit/

Unfortunately if a club has a great number of carp anglers then a great number of pegs should be capable of catering for them ,if a club doesnt move with the times then the club loses members and rent and stock doesnt grow on trees the club will decline because if the majority goes elswhere the minority get the bill.

Carp also mean a lake is fished all year round ,mine has not enough to attract carp anglers ,40 peg lake. 2 anglers today as it was sunny and in the winter there maybe only one a week ,put carp in spoil the water but get the bums on seats

I think it is more all the commercial hype with carp that is annoying in the tackle shop but if you look through all of that two thirds of carp tackle can be used in general fishing.

A bit off subject but for the last couple of years the time I have spent fishing has been very limited which in turn made me change the way I fish as it is all short sessions.apart from a holiday every year to a stunning little fishery in Devon where I started to experiment again using swing tips albeit for good sized Carp. Anyway the point is that I had forgotten how good and exciting this method was so I started to look around for a pair of dedicated tip rods for general fishing but capable of handling decent fish such as Tench and Chub. I had decided that what I wanted would be no more than 10 feet long but could not find anything existing in the market at the time. I also looked for suitable blanks to build my own and also whether any of my existing rods could be modified. To cut a long story short I came accross the Shakespeare Sigma specialist range which have a threaded end ring and although very cheap appeared to fit the bill and at at £25 a rod would not be a disaster if they were no good. A pair of 10 Foot specialists were ordered and they turned out to be ridiculous value for money to such a degree that I ordered a further pair of the 11 foot versions as well. I would have been hard pushed to rebuild a handle at what was the price of a rod and In practice they have proved to be excellent, handling fish from small up to low doubles with a nice progressive action. These have been mainly been coupled up with Preston Banjo feeders and pellets which has proved to be a very effective combination. I must confess to be a fan of Preston /Korum/Drennan products as they virtually cover every situation you may come up against. A 13 foot 1.5lb rod I think may prove to be difficult to find unless it was purpose built but like Andrew and others have said there is a huge amount of end tackle available that is designed for all types of fishing. Get back into it John and enjoy it. Tackle is personal and what suits one does not suit another. All that matters is that it suits you.

2/3rds IS general tackle but get a 'carp' label and a bigger profit for the manufacturer

It's a bit like in days gone by buying Ford parts. Very cheap unless the pat had the name Lotus on it

The two best times to go fishing are when it's raining and when it's not

Yes that's right and it is a rip off but atleast it is still there to use even if it is so overpriced
