Am I too far gone, to ever return?

In have to say that I agree with Gozzer. I feel out of place in tackle shops there is very little to interest me and little to buy. Most items are brought mail order and a lot of this turns out to be rubbish.

River fishing has picked up this last season and one tackle shop has actually started to stock some river floats. Even the Drake floats, although when I asked if he would stock their crowquill avons he didn't have a clue what I was on about. It all seems to be match, which has driven out the bigger fish, where heavily fished, but is a start.

There seems so very little knowledge of river fishing that when talking to one chap about the river I had to point it was the closed season. He was very disappointed.

Next week I am heading down to Christchurch for a weeks holiday. I love it down there, lots of tackle shops full of river gear, I stock up when I'm there.

For rods I have started re-vamping old models. Two Diawa amorphous 13ft for £20, new stand off guides, hook keeps and insert a spliced tip and a couple of lovely light stick float rods. I am tempted to try the J W Youngs 13/15 trotter, has anyone knowledge of this.

I tried to buy nothing with the word Carp on it. Although I ended up with a landing net pole with it on.

There seems everything against the river. Access, predators, lack of interest, harder with regard to techniques, pollution, the climate etc, but I don't care, I am not going to become a garden gnome fisherman at a pond where the fish will take any bait no matter how I present it.

Here's a link to the 13 footer (I've 2 of these) & best trotters ever - beats rods twice+ the price IMO.

Personally I might not opt for the 13/15 as the extra 2 foot section COULD compromise the overall action??

Yes, it's sold out on here, but is widely available in good tackle shops also at around £60 - £65. which is what I paid for one of mine.

The other I bought on eBay 2nd hand but came with a spare middle & top section - presumably the seller stood on the butt end of one, or would have had 2 to sell. Serial No 10542.

I'm not selling lol.

I'm also a big Porcupine fan myself, though the Dave Harrell, wire stemmed sticks are very good.

Martin, Thank you for that, they seem to be out of stock as well. The ones I was looking at are different, they are a brown blank with red whippings and large stand off guides for the centre pin reel. They are supposed to come in a ready rod case so you are ready for the bank. I have put a link below from ebay. I no longer like buying from ebay or amazon as you have to be so careful. One person on ebay has listed them new but has deleted the case from the description.

Years ago I had the BJ Float from Youngs, I never really got on with it and then lost a few inches off the tip. I recently repaired it with a spliced tip and it has improved it, in my opinion, for trotting.

Thanks for all the replies gents.

barbelbarmy has hit the nail on the head with my thoughts on the tackle shops I've been in. It's been the same since my two local shops went under and closed. I don't do ebay.

All my thoughts on starting back in June this year had to be shelved due to a few family problems, followed by my own apathetic feelings. My partial excitement at the anticipation of a 'new start' waned as the year went on, except for the occasional fluttering in my stomach when passing a particularly 'interesting' stretch of river.

Still, there's always 2017, it has to be better than 2016......fingers crossed. :D

A bit off subject but for the last couple of years the time I have spent fishing has been very limited which in turn made me change the way I fish as it is all short sessions.apart from a holiday every year to a stunning little fishery in Devon where I started to experiment again using swing tips albeit for good sized Carp. Anyway the point is that I had forgotten how good and exciting this method was so I started to look around for a pair of dedicated tip rods for general fishing but capable of handling decent fish such as Tench and Chub. I had decided that what I wanted would be no more than 10 feet long but could not find anything existing in the market at the time. I also looked for suitable blanks to build my own and also whether any of my existing rods could be modified. To cut a long story short I came accross the Shakespeare Sigma specialist range which have a threaded end ring and although very cheap appeared to fit the bill and at at £25 a rod would not be a disaster if they were no good. A pair of 10 Foot specialists were ordered and they turned out to be ridiculous value for money to such a degree that I ordered a further pair of the 11 foot versions as well. I would have been hard pushed to rebuild a handle at what was the price of a rod and In practice they have proved to be excellent, handling fish from small up to low doubles with a nice progressive action. These have been mainly been coupled up with Preston Banjo feeders and pellets which has proved to be a very effective combination. I must confess to be a fan of Preston /Korum/Drennan products as they virtually cover every situation you may come up against. A 13 foot 1.5lb rod I think may prove to be difficult to find unless it was purpose built but like Andrew and others have said there is a huge amount of end tackle available that is designed for all types of fishing. Get back into it John and enjoy it. Tackle is personal and what suits one does not suit another. All that matters is that it suits you.

I'm looking at these particular Shakespeare rods with great interest - the question I have is where have you found a set of tips, both quiver and swing that fit them. I can't find any info online as to the diameter or screw thread size, and don't want to end up with a rod that I can't use properly. Would love to know if anyone has got one and found a supplier of appropriate tips.

Gozzer,

I think a trip with some like minded fisherman may be what you need. Proper anglers rather than Carp 'danglers'

!

You could be right mate, but most of my old match angling mates carried on in the carp puddles. They were one of the reasons I packed in match fishing.

On the rare occasion that I've been in recent years, I've preferred to go alone. I can pick and choose where, when, and how long I go for. If I meet someone I know when I'm there, that's fine, if I don't, then that's fine as well.

Gozzer,

You are sounding just like me, I tend to fish alone just the same. I am on the commitee of a river club that has a lot of river matches. I don't and will not fish matches and no longer fish ponds even though my favourite species is Tench. When the end came for the village type pond I stopped fishing them, I have nothing against Carp but loved to fish a pond when there was crucian, tench, bream and carp. I can't help feeling that the modern Carp angler is the more idle type of fisherman, the way people are with most interests today.

Whoaaa! You can't really slag off Carp Anglers and and call others 'proper' anglers, or Danglers in your case. I am solely a Barbel Angler, although I have fished for all species as a River only Angler for many many years, except for the odd excursion to carp ponds for some surface fun. There is a huge amount of product development gone into tackle, because of the Carp boy's, and has certainly made life easier for us all.

OK I am not a fan of those horrible Carp F1 Commercials, hate them in fact, but if that what rocks 'yer boat then fair enough, River Carp a a worthwhile adversary, and I have respect for those that target them.

So with respect, this is Anglers Net and I would hate this place to be too elitist into whatever type of Angling is deemed more worthwhile.
