Bolt rigs for roach etc

Recommended Posts

John I am talking generally in terms of how different species will feed, surely it is beyond doubt that any predator will be less cautious than any other non pred? There are always exceptions to the rule, as you and others have pointed out.

Blimey, talk about stating the obvious.

Yes Pike can be shy, especially in Winter when they are torpid, but I think it would be plain daft not to agree that Roach are so much different and of all the species can be the most frustrating when attempting to strike into them, but that is the fascination, how boring would it be if we had a 100% success rate?

Neil, with my lightening fast reactions and striking power I have no prob's hooking up with the largest and most shy biting of roach :).

I think the hardest part of catching larger roach is finding the waters where they're actually present. Round these parts all the quarrys etc that used to hold large roach have either been used for landfill or filled in with carp.

Yup, I thought I was stating what I believe was fairly obvious. But it wasn't me who was generalising about the behaviour of fish, based on the species.

"Big roach are wary, don't let anyone tell you different", "Pike are idiots".

Grabbing a big lump of cheese on a size 6, and 8lb line, and giving a 'whip round' bite, isn't the action of a 'wary' fish.

John.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

I'm not sure zander fit that generalisation. In my experience, despite being a predator, they are often extremely finicky and cautious. Very often the case with big perch too.

And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music

With your lightening fast reactions, could you please stop messaging me, I am not interested.

But Neil, I only asked if you might be rabbit re-incarnated and you've got all hopping mad :).

. I've said on here, that it's logical that fish of the same species, even the same shoal, and year class, will differ in their approach to any situation. Some will have a better sense of smell/taste, some quicker reflexes, some better eyesight, etc. So to generalise on the fish according to the species only, is naïve to say the least.

Fred J Taylor, whenever one of his mates caught a decent fish, would say "Well, that just goes to prove there are fools amongst fish as well as amongst men !" Obviously meant as a wind-up......and yet......

If one fishes a small water for any length of time and photographs and returns the fish caught, it soon becomes obvious if you compare photos spanning a year or so that certain recognizable fish get caught time and time again. There are others that get caught once (and returned) yet are never caught again. Still others can be observed in the water occasionally yet never seem to get caught at all. This has happened too often, with several species, to be regarded as coincidence.

....and my answer to anyone claiming that one fish looks much like another is to suggest they look more closely.....

A flaw in your theory (unless your the sole angler on your own pond) whist some may never get caught again by you perhaps they are caught often by other anglers ,rather than some fish learning lessons perhaps its down to dislike of glorius beards in which case i too am in the same boat.

I did start marking fish by cutting off all their fins and removing their eyes and came to the conclusion they rarely get caught again but strange clones were often found in the drain perhaps my marking was effective but a tad draconian like witch ducking
