A few hours out yesterday.....

Tigger, not used your new rod today then, how did you get on with it? What is the rod and reel in these photos. Looks like a Gary Mills reel.

Hi BB, no I didn't use the new rod today. The new rod was ok but I need a few trotting sessions with it before I can get a true opinion of it....i'm on the fence at the moment.

Your right about the reel BB, it's a Mills FJT Specialist, the wide drum version out of the two FJT's that mills made. The rod was my all time favorite float rod, my normark avenger :)

Just had a quick read through the post and it has made me want to get out trotting again so once my broken arm is well enough I may treat myself to a trip to the river. I've often wondered what the tri cast rods were like so will be keeping an eye out to see your opinion of it.

I know i've only used it the one time but if i'm honest it ain't anything like as good as my normark avenger. I think the worst thing about it for me is the reel seat. It's most likely gonn'a be next season now before I use it again, maybe i'll get used to the handle....doubt it though  .

I have been thinking about purchasing one of the Tri-cast range for a long time and when I first saw your photograph I thought it didn't look too bad. I have never seen one in the flesh and their website doesn't really show the handle. Since I had the latest Young's rod I have started to look at handles more. The Young's rod has the same screw up reel fitting which I thought I wouldn't like but I do. However they have maintained a parallel handle. The problem I have found with the Young's is not enough handle above the reel. I know most of you are going to say that it is not needed but when winding in (I don't bat my reel) I move my hand forward and use my finger like a bail arm to distribute line across the reel and help reduce bedding in. I will often do this even when playing a fish if it is small enough.

Looking at the Tri-cast handle not sure if enough above reel and don't know if the swelling will be uncomfortable although brings reel closer to the rod.

I have been digging my old rods out recently and starting to see the benefits of the two graphite sliding rings!

Got a Tri -cast Trilogy XS which I have been using for the past eighteen months and gets the thumbs up from me had some proper lumps on it.The main reason I like it are double rings all the way up to the top section and it,s light as a feather reel seat has not been an issue apart from needs regular cleaning or it gets a bit very sticky holds any one of my three centre pins securley.

Had a couple of hours out yesterday but it wasn't very good fishing, just three small chub landed and another one did an impression of a salmon shooting up out of the water and throwing the hook in the process. I'm pretty confident that if i'd legered I would have had much better catch results but for me it's not always about catching numbers etc but rather the method of doing so that gives me the buzz....

Sorry BB, i'd posted my fishing post before reading the the last posts. If you find the screw upreel holder on the Youngs rod to your liking them i'msure you'll like the Tricast Allerton rod seat. I dislike the feel of the thread on the heel of my hand,.

I did look at the XS rods Jerry but found them a little slow for my liking. Even the Allerton waggler feels slow in comparison to my other rods which are mainly quite stiff (fast action) blanks. The Avenger has a fast'ish action but once under pressure bends right through, so it has a great progressive action. It makes a superb trotting rod and hitting bites at long ranges of up to a hundred yards is no problem.

Tigger,

Extremely healthy looking fish. Must not be a lot of pressure on the venue and on the swims you were fishing.

I too set goals based on "today's goals" although I must confess I never really settled on one specific "favorite".

I wish I could fish waters like you have on your side of the pond, I reckon you'll have some proper wild rivers with wild fish that haven't ever seen an angler let alone been caught. Just the sheer vastness of your country and it's huge amount of rivers makes the uk angling pale into insignificance.
