A few hours out yesterday.....

II have to tell you no fish in the world is more rewarding than a 6" wild brook trout taken from above the timberline (roughly 12,000ft) from a stream not much wider than your hand.

Absolutely right Phone - which is why I made a trip to the Divide to catch brookies and greenback cut-throats. Even made a trip into Boulder and bought a few A.K.Best flies as if I hadn't got plenty of my own.

Got my brookies, biut couldn't fish for the cut-throats as they were spawning llate - so sat and watched them instead.

Got a nice mackinaw down at Blue Mesa the next week by way of compensation

I arrived at the water at 3pm and the sun was shining and there was a brisk south westerly...just how I like it for tench smile.gif. I made my way round to a shallow part of the water where the wind was blowing straight in my face. Anyhow from the off I was harassed by small rudd and perch, even with 12 maggots on a 14's hook they managed to engulf it. Eventually after catching god only knows how many rudd I hit into a tench which put up a spirited fight, even whilst playing it I could see it had a really nice colour, a lovely yellow belly which you don't seem to see so often these days. It wasn't a large fish but as it was the first tench of the year I weighed it at an ounce or two over 5lb. After a few more rudd and perch I hooked into another tench which like the first one gave a good account of itself but i'd say it was a pound or so lighter. The clouds had gathered and it was spitting and was obviously gonn'a throw it down so I wrapped up and marched back to the wheels on the double, just in time as the skys opened up as I closed the car boot !!

Tigger,

The fish you refer to as a "yellow belly" is beautiful. Do you reckon that is the first time that fish has ever been out?

Phone

Vagabond,

Sadly, I have never caught a mackinaw (that I know of) and was not wise enough to "exactly" identify my high altitude fishes. No, I was no better then with a camera than I am today.

Thank's Phone, unfortunately the picture doesn't show the true colours of it, it was a excellent looking tench. I'd say most of the tench in that water have been caught at some point but it would be nice to think it hadn't :). I do know of several waters close to me that are little fished and there's a very good chance that they hold uncaught fish, i'll be having a go on those waters when the weather warms up a little as they don't get active until then.

I had the latter hours of the afternoon trying for a tench yesterday. I got on the tail end of the wind as I usually try to but it seemed all the small rudd and perch had the same idea and they attacked my bait as soon as it hit the water! Obviously using maggots for bait wasn't helping matters but I think bunches of maggots or sweetcorn are the best bait on the water (I had no corn) and so I just tried to fish through the rudd and perch. Eventually I got lucky and had a small tench of about 3lb, not exactly a great tench session but this water is quite hard at the best of times for a number of reasons.

Better than I did on my first tench session of the year on Sunday evening - two skimmers and a couple of little perch.

I think it's the time of year Steve, a bit on the early side really.

It is, though I know they have been coming out - someone had 11 tench last week, biggest 8-2! The bream have also been showing.

I should probably have fished feeder, but I wanted to fish the centrepin and watch a float.
