A few hours out yesterday.....

Back in the early 70s when I was in the RN and living in married quarters my neighbor was a Chef and he cooked a Pike that I had caught plus a small Carp that I’d caught too just to see whether I liked them, but although it was edible I wasn’t a great fan of either.

All,

Don't get me wrong I Became 100% supportive of the UK C&R restrictions primarily because of circumstances. It is and was a completely different situation from what I had here at home. Among favored species we fish for hatchery fish. In fact, I  just googled, in 2019 the number of hatchery fish released exceeded 150,000,000,000 that is BILLION.

Gozzer, I joined March 2001. The subject has been approached a number of times. Because I am so unfamiliar with your regulations I don't remember a specific thread and most likely was a reader and not a contributor.

I DO remember a number of rather heated threads on what constituted fish safety, especially pike

Were you posting on here when the big 'take a fish for the pot' debate was going on Phone?

The result was that around 7/8 thousand 'anglers' out of an estimated 1.5 million, voted to ban the taking of fish from our rivers. Except that is for, 1 pike up to 65cms, 2 grayling between 30 and 38 cms, and 15 other fish under 20cms, per day. When I contacted the EA about my concerns, such as keeping the option to take fish, with suitable catch and size limits, would take some of the arguments from the antis, with regard to the situation in Germany and the green Party, he said that I could still take most fish for the pot, as long as they were 20cms or less. I questioned his logic in the fact that I was denied very occasionally taking one or two perch of around 1lb, but could legally take 15 perch of 20cms every day I went fishing, and that anyone could legally take a couple grayling from a specific slot size that could in theory decimate a year class on some rivers. His answer was that it was what the majority of anglers wanted, as well as the Angling trust. That day, I lost much of my faith in a large section of my fellow anglers, and all of the little faith I had in the Angling trust, and the EA.

John.

PS.

I don't know what's happened to the site. I can't post pictures, I get timed out in a short time, and even logged out automatically!

Is it just me?

Your not on your own, I can no longer post my pictures either.

I think bostering food with low wages had something to do with it.

I fondly remember my mrs jumping back from a jack in the sink in 1975 (who had been in a creel all day) came back to life and lunged at her .Cant say a mouth full of bones was delicious enough to repeat but the cats had the odd one in the following years that had to be dispatched for humane reasons so saved on tins of cat food.

Carp are mud and nothing changes that even the cats just sniffed but the kids came home with carrier bags of trout and happily burnt them into crisps on the barbi and happily scoffed them ,the cat waited for slips between fork and lips lol

Think you have it about right there Dave - Late 60's to Late 70's was when I was in my mid to late teens & the taking of a Pike (wrongly now) was considered some sort of passage to Angling Manhood.

A pair of Kippers or a bit of Finney Haddock (with a poached egg) goes down much better these days.

Kippers now give me terrible farts and breath you could strip paint with so i (the mrs ) forbids them ,strangely smoked mackeral is fine .

Got a couple of smokers but unused since i no longer sea fish ,the act of smoking made even pout edible (just) bought a barbi last year which allows fish or meat to be smoked up in the lid ,i must try it on the frozen somethings or other i have in the freezer (herring i think?)

I bought a load but ran out of vacuum seal bags so 2 went in an ordinary ziplock bag with as much air removed as possible they got freezer burn in six months (and were donated to the local fox) the rest look fine showing going to the effort of vacuum sealing food is well worth it.

A Fivers worth of smoked Haddock in Microwave witt a bit of water to make some steam & some butter & holed cling film to let steam out. 4 minutes Max!!

(Take no notice of the warning about clingfilm not suitable for microwave cooking - Used it for years - It's fine)

I use a Pyrex dish for that.

Meanwhile - Poach eggs separately so they arrive at the same time!!
