I had no choice of where toosition the reel on that rod Martin, but even on rods with sliding bamds I still position it in that spot.

Yes mate, absolutely the best position for the pin re balance & casting.

Otherwise it's like driving a crane.

These "creatures" that I will be angling for can best be described as short fat perch. BLUEGILL - They are predators and won't be the least interested in anything I will have other than a pinch of lob or the fishmeal pellets. Unless VERY lucky they will NOT be over 4 - 6 oz.

The reason I'm starting with pellets is so that I will have 100% consistency in the weight department. Catching or not catching isn't a question, my dog can catch them. It's this infernal gear I shall be trying to become familiar with.

 

I do have some salmon egg hooks smaller than #8 if I feel they are interfering with the balance of the rig. I'll toss them in the bag. I'm steering away from other flyfishing kit - half the project is to fish for them "proper"

The idea of finesse is catching things that dont wish to be caught ,if your dog can catch them use a dog!

Perhaps you''ve hit on exactly why you don't see many "sport" fishermen for dinks. I once read a Frenchman holds the record for number of fish caught in a single match (950+ or something like that). The question on this side of the pond was "what did he do after lunch?"

Not sure fishing is a sport! A hobby or pastime perhaps the amount of people doing it as a profession must be very small asides the equiptment side .

With the onset of braid even less sporting imho you can have line thats breaking strain is far more than the quarry and damn thin aswell .
