A few hours out yesterday.....

All,

Steve, I remember the video. It truly was almost "dancing". Activities of approximately equal value IMO

Chesters1, I suspect carp are the only true sporting fish left to anglers.

I decided to have a couple of hours trotting for chub and barbel today as although it was only 12 degrees it felt ok and the wind was minimal. I'd scoped out the levels before making a move so knew the river was at a good height for my preference.

When I got to the stretch it was just how I like it, no sign of anyone else .

The stretch above this one belongs to another of the clubs i'm in and it had about a dozen cars on the carpark, glad i'm in this smaller club also.

Anyhow when i'd made my quite short walk from the car to my chosen swim I began by wading out and then cattying out a good few pouches of maggots and casters, the mix was because there's several weeks worth of different batches mixed together lol....who cares as the fish don't seem to be put off .

From the first trott through, my float was constantly dipping under for a moment and coming back to the surface because there wase swarms of minnows attacking my bait, they where patroling like bluebottles round shyte in the height of summer!

I caught lots of the little blighters but each one of them may have been a barbel so I had to strike when the float stayed submerged for more than a split second. Turned out two of those very bites where barbel so it was wise to strike at them. I noticed a lot of fish coming up from a couple of feet downstream of me to a few yards downstream. I knew straight away it was grayling sucking in my mixture of old maggots and casters spilling from my hand as I re baited the hook so I decided to have a play round and try to catch them. I moved my bulk shot and my dropper shot up flush to my float stem and squeezed a couple of old black casters on so they take in air and their insides make a seal and keep them afloat. The plan worked well and I had a number of them, each and everyone of em fought way beyond their sizes and catching them was great fun, much better than dace etc.

Before long I was dithering with cold as unlike back home where the wind was just a slight gust, here it was a strong wind and the chill it made made the temp's feel much lower than 12 degrees! I only had a t shirt on and a small sleevless body warmer which should have been fine if the wind hadn't been so strong. When my fingers went numb and my teeth began to chatter I decided enough was enough so I came home, glad I did n'all.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've been keeping my eye on the weather and temperature predictions since last week, when I noticed a rise in temperature predicted for today with no rain until later tonight. I checked the river levels this morning and they were just right for float fishing and the weather was pretty much as the weather men had predicted since last week!

I popped to the local tackle shop and got another pint of mixed red and white maggots to add to my old maggots some of which must have been in and out of the bait fridge for well over a month, there was a nice mix of casters and scabby little shrivelled up maggots lol. Anyhow, the fish didn't seem to mind my old maggots accompanied with sweetcorn and I had a great session swimming the stream.

I had 14 barbel and one grayling and I reckon there was several barbel tipping into double figures. Since none of them threatened to come close to my PB I just couldn't be bothered to weigh them. Here's a few pics of the fish

Some cracking fish there Ian, I wish I had access to a local water that was so prolific.

There is a silver lining on the horizon though, the River Aire was stocked with barbel a few years ago. I wasn't in agreement with it, I didn't think they would thrive, but have been proved wrong. These fish are already topping out at 6/7lbs, with many more in the 2/5lb bracket. My only concern, which was part of my original objection, is that they are very limited in their location. I fear that these areas will be targeted too much, and the fish will suffer because of it.

My main problem now is finding bank space that isn't a part of the 'Leeds of the future', building project.

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

John, if they are thriving as they appear to be doing it's likely that they will be widespread. Just pick a nice place to be and give it a go, I reckon you'll strike it lucky pretty quick although nows not the best time to start float fishing for em, maybe touch leger, or just leger?

Apparently i've been very lucky as there are a lot of people still blanking round these parts! It seems otters ans cormorants have eaten all the barbel and other fish LOl.

I do a lot of mooching to locate the fish John and they very often up sticks and move on like gypos so i'm constantly on the hunt for the blighters :).

Finding somewhere to fish is a bit of a problem Ian, especially in Leeds centre. There used to be loads of bank space, but they've 'modernised' the river frontage with luxury apartments, hotels, offices, along with the usual fancy drinking places. They also have the Royal Armouries, that take up a lot of the places we used to fish. There are some spots upstream of the city, but they are few and far between. I'm going to join Leeds & District ASA when the books come out in January, they control a lot of water downstream of the city.

Doesn't Bradford city angling have a lot of rivers up that neck of the woods?

Manys the time i've considered joining the club. If you do join you can get me a guest ticket and i'll join you :).

  • 5 months later...

I had some great trotting sessions on the river over Crimbo and the new year, caught some really nice chub and barbel. Didn't do lots of fishing over the last few weeks of the season as the river conditions weren't to good.

Today was my first time out fishing since the river season closed!

I've had a shimano technium specialist quiver for 10yrs plus now and thought it was time I gave it go!!

Anyhow, the rod was great and with a 3/4 ounce tip fitted it gave very positive registration whenever a fish showed interest in my bait. I enjoyed the session and had a rudd or perch on virtually every cast, and even had some of my intended quarry mixed in amongst the rudd and perch, a few pic's....
