A few hours out yesterday.....

Tigger,

When I was able to fish several times a week throughout the year I had a nasty habit. Somewhere in the middle of May, just as the water began to warm, I would horse a world record fish and loose it just as you described. I always considered it the "beginning of the fishing year". It is amazing how some species gain strength and stamina as the water average temperature warms only a few degrees.

What are the chances of me getting you into a nice spincast reel instead of those refugee looking ones.

Phone

I agree, the fish do power up as tye temp's go higher, although barbel go like the clappers most of the time.

Phone, what is a spincast reel, is it one of those closed faced type reels?

Tigger,

This should get you started if you're just beginning to learn how to fish, or looking for an easy to use reel, a spincast reel is an ideal option. That thing you are using looks so cumbersome. Just trying to help

We have closed face reels like ABU 500 series but i have a fantastic Roddy 180 which is convertable unlike most close face reels ,i use it with my ABU caster 152 zoom and its ideal in my overgrown bank river i use it in .And yes its used upside down like you use them and the handle is on the left hand side!

Yours is on the wrong side lol

There biggest drawback is slow retrieve and not a lot of line for those trout that set off like steamtrains

We differentiate between your spincast reels and what we think as closed face yours are used on top of the rod and ours underneath ,weve always had a few about but not so common (closed face are hardly common nowadays) as they used to be ,i only use fixed spools for carp and cats my ABU's still do the job float fishing as they have since the 70's when i bought most of them ,i sold my 507? the prices went through the roof so it went i wish i had kept it !

Never got on with center pins even when you couldnt get anything else ,took a 4lb hammer to mine when an uncle gave me his intrepid and never used another

Ok, thanks for the info Phone :), yes those are the reels I thought you meant. Problem is, they're more for lure fishing and not a reel for trotting a float.

I do have abu closed face reels, and I have baitruners, ordinary front drag and rear drag fixed spool reels in various sizes, multipliers also but non of those reels can compare to a centrepin for the purpose of trotting a float down a river. Beleive me Phone, I have used my abu 501, 506 and my fixed spool reels for trotting and the only time they are ok for trotting is when i've used a waggler (bottom fixed only float) as you can't hold back when using a waggler fixed bottom only, you usually just allow it to go with the flow.

Phone, I do appreciate you trying to help me, but the reels I use for trotting are the best tool for the job, pity your so far away as I would like to show you how good the centrepin is for trotting a float :).

Tigger I don’t know if you already knew this but this web site had its own Centrepin a few years ago, designed by Jigotai See link: https://www.anglersnet.co.uk/reviews/tackle-and-bait-reviews/anglersnet_centrepin/

I’m not sure whether you can still buy one but it got rave reports.

Hi Keith, yes, I remember when Jigotai started making them. There were a number of members got them at the time and all thought very highly of them. The thing that stopped me from buying one was the big logo on them.

Not long ago there was a chap on face book (a chap name of Tim Lennon) selling some, maybe he bought the remaining stock from Jigotai?

I have no odea if the reels are still being made, but I have a feeling Jigotai ceased to make them some time back.

I had a few hours trotting today but the barbel where elusive again, they often are at the begining of the season. I did hook two of them but lost them to hook pulls. By the way the fish acted when I hooked them they were fould hooked, and the fact that the hook pulled out of them suggests they were foul hooked.

I did catch a few chub and dace, also a good sized trout of about 3 1/2 to 4lb. I caught the same fish in the same swim back in Febuary and was happy to see it still alive and kicking :).

Your'e right Tigger, but I fish exclusively Commies these days, I'm 62 now & would like to think the reel would be used in anger by a deserving member on here.

I'd Never put it on the Bay!! - It's in the spare bedroom right now just waiting to be re loved!!

I've had so much pleasure using it myself over the years & still as good as it was from new.

£25 includes postage. A great trotter worth every penny, and some!!
