I understand if i say anything i am expected to back it up why doesnt "science" need to do the same ,what part of proof dont you understand?

Or are scientists so far above proof isnt needed to back up what they spout? ,the slack jawed throng hang on their every word whatever nonsense they spout

BECAUSE THAT'S NOT SCIENCE.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

No its extremely close to religion where nonsense has been spouted but excuses made instead of proof of what they say is true

Science moves in mysterious ways when the hard questions need an answer

Cory,

I know of NO discipline that consistently passes the sniff test.

Ken,

By what philosophical standard do you consider any of the "science" in post $43 "better"?

I'm for the most part with Chesters1. How can the unknown be known in advance?

Ask a priest, they are the experts in that field.

Cory, Ken,

For years I’ve been perplexed by people who tell me “if you don’t trust science you’re an idiot” – or – Religion is just for people who don’t know the facts!” – or – lately “you are really old if you don’t think I’m right you must be incompetent” (this last one from both sides, religion and science).

I do not and can (probably) never know how you perceive the world, as in this case, for your ability to judge me. I won’t try – seem to me our perceptions almost certainly change with age.

However it works, no matter if it is objective or subjective the scientist “clones” it over and over. The function “science” is to believe what we perceive , while leaving out the bits and bobs of our conditioned mental facilities. (i.e. believe scientists or priests)

Why do you object to calling science a religion – both rely on faith. Neither can be 100% sure - can they?

Because it not a religion and it does not require faith. Faith is pretending to know what one cannot possibly know.

Science is a process. It's end result is to say this is the best explanation we can find, it explains what we see, it isn't contradicted by anything we can think of and it predicts this and this.

The process then requires that the person proposing the new explanation invite their peers to tear holes in their work.

There is no faith

As you suggest, "Neither can be 100% sure", but only one has the capacity to change its position in light of new evidence or a better explanation of the observable nature of things.

Would you rather have a watch that requires an occasional correction or would you rather have one that stopped working in the late bronze age?

I ask "You are choking to death on a piece of food. I can perform the Heimlich maneuver or I can pray for you. What's it to be?"
