Big baits for pike?

Is a bigger deadbait for pike more productive?

I have always used the sprat or sardine or half an eel so in general no more than about 6 inches long but after talking to local experienced guys about what will catch on my local river they say they get much more bites on the bigger baits such as full herring or mackerel.

I have had no real choice in recent years but to fish stillwaters so could it be that the choice for the rivers is a larger bait?

What do the pikers think on here?

I'm not a Pike specialist by any means but personally I have had more pike on half Mackeral and half herrings closely followed by half lampreys rather than on whole dead baits I've always believed it was the extra leakage of fish smells that were the main reason.

Sea fishing for the toothy ones, we use mackerel flappers where we take the backbone out, leave the flesh and the guts, I see no reason why it shouldn't work for pike etc.

I have seen some use a whole mackerel again for the conger and ling, yet very few and far between, it's the smell that is attractive I have no doubt.

Free to choose apart from the ones where the trust poked their nose in. Common eel. tope. Bass and sea bream. All restricted.

New for 2016 TAT are the main instigators for the demise of the u k bass charter boat industry, where they went screaming off to parliament and for the first time assisting so called angling gurus set up bass take bans with the e u using rubbish exaggerated info collected by ices from anglers, they must be very proud.

Upgrade, the door has been closed with regards to anglers being linked to the e u superstate and the failed c f p. So TAT will no longer need to pay monies to the EAA anymore as that org is no longer relevant to the u k . Goodbye to the europeon anglers alliance and pathetic restrictions from the e u.

Angling is better than politics, ban politics from angling.

Consumer of bass. where is the evidence that the u k bass stock need angling trust protection. Why won't you work with your peers instead of castigating them. They have the answer.

Recipie's for mullet stew more than welcomed.

Angling sanitation trust and kent and sussex sea anglers org delete's and blocks rsa's alternative opinion on their face book site. Although they claim to rep all.

new for 2014. where is the evidence that the south coast bream stock need the angling trust? Your campaign has no evidence. Why won't you work with your peers, the inshore under tens? As opposed to alienating them? Angling trust failed big time re bait digging, even fish legal attempted to intervene and failed, all for what, nothing.

Looks like the sea angling reps have been coerced by the ifca's to compose sea angling strategy's that the ifca's at some stage will look at drafting into legislation to manage the rsa, because they like wasting tax payers money. That's without asking the rsa btw. You know who you are..

HOW big ? If we are considering sprat as "small" and mackerel as "big" and looking for a big bait/big fish correlation, then all I can say is that I have had pike from small jack to double figures on sprat, and all sizes from twenties down to four-pounders on herring/mackerel. So there is some correlation, but not much. I can remember quite a few double-figure pike on quite small plugs/spinners also.. Has anyone tried (say) a two-pound haddock or cod ?

I have read a few accounts of big (20+) pike taking livebaits of two or three pounds,, but have myself never tried anything, dead or live, much over a pound on fresh water (have used skipjack tuna up to eight pounds for marlin though - that does work)

All,

The size of the pike in the venue and in your current swim is probably more and issue than the size of the bait. I've never seen it - Canadians talk of pike salmon fights. Fish of equal size. Don't know the details but that would be pretty big bait.

I'm not a Pike angler, but maybe bait size doesn't matter that much all the time.

If a Pike isn't hungry because it's just had a large meal - maybe (like us) won't say no to a chocolate!! (e,g. a sprat or small roach etc)

Its quite the opposite as the temptation of a large meal gets to entice it i think. Many pike will just leave it half in its mouth while the other half is literally being digested as it lays motionless on the bottom

Have you seen the photo sequence in Bullers book 'PIKE' of the two pike fry where one completely swallows another pike fry of around the same size as itself? In the last shot you can just see the other pikes tail inside the mouth of the pike that swallowed it. I also have this same photo sequence in another book (Angling in pictures).

Caught big Pike on small baits and small ones on whole baits nearly as big as them ,I believe for Perch large lives do single out better fish but don't think it's the same with size of dreads for Pike ....just my take mind

Fishing from the yak last week with tiny t tail lures I found a deeper hole in the river and drifted it for Perch vertical jigging and whomp the rod hooped over as angry very good double started to tow me out in front of the gin palaces leaving the lock ,any ways those small lures worked that way have resulted in 99% Perch for me but this time .....

Big ait big fish don't always follow

We are not putting it back it is a lump now put that curry down and go and get the scales

have I told you abouit the cruise control on my Volvo ,,,,,,,bla bla bla Barder rod has it come yet?? and don`t even start me on Chris Lythe :bleh::icecream:
