World's Oldest Fish Hooks

They aren't two hooks, it's two sides of the same hook, as you can see from the similarities in the pic below....

I haven't marked in all the similarities otherwise there'd be a plethora of lines.

Trust someone to be observant and spoil the research tsk

Saying that there is a distinct break line that could mean the fat bit was longer perhaps with a hole or groove or bump to stop the line slipping of the end?

Still wondering why its not made of fish ribs or better still a bush thorn which wouldnt be so fragile so i still of the opinion its not a fish hook it just looks fish hook shaped and theres no barb which should be found out about the fist time a mismade hook is caught in something and noted

I am sure even 23000 years ago we were not as thick as we think they were unfortunately its pretty hard to date things that far back unless they are in context so any finds made before with less rigour could be far older and ofcourse more fragile hooks made from ribs or thorns have long gone

John,

They have to be two different hooks - they curve in different directions.

There is a far simpler method of "hooking" fish, Just a tough piece of wood - or bone - a bit like a cocktail stick, but shorter and thicker (reminds me of Radish, my fishing mate :) ) and sharp at each end. Tie line exactly to middle, bury in a minnow or lump of bait. Allow plenty of time (its a gorge bait) and the "hook" or cocktail stick wedges in gullet,

Remember early fishers wanted to catch and eat, not catch and release.

I think modern versions were mentioned a few years ago and ofcourse turned into a fight between those that care on behalf of others and those that can manipulate them into a frenzy LOL
