Lure Rod

Hi. I am looking into buying my first lure rod and reel. I'd like them to be decent quality. I'd like to catch perch and pike on the broads.. I'm not sure whether to go light or medium. Can anyone recommend some rods and reels?

Cheers

I cannot recommend a specific brand of rod - wrong side of the pond to know what is available over there. Also, a good lure rod for pike is not likely to be the same as a good lure rod for perch. However, it should be possible to give you the general characteristics you will need to look for.

- Would you prefer fixed spool or multiplier?

- What weight range of lures will you be using?

- Will you need to worry about pin-point accuracy or is casting distance more important?

- Do you tend to treat rods very gently or do you need durability? Glass fibre is more robust but graphite is more sensitive and carbon fibre (a composite of the two) can be a good compromise between the two. Personally I'd tend toward glass fibre for pike and graphite for perch.

Hi. Thank you for your advice. I had a think about it and thought I'd prefer to target large perch so I went for a Shakespeare Agility drop shot rod and bought the KastKing Sharky II reel (size 3000). Both supposed to be good quailty for a budget. Whilst read I saw a lot on the web about how poor our lure rods are for the money in comparison to yours over there in the USA but that is pretty much to be expected here in rip off Britain.

I like and use the Savage Gear 8' 'Bushwhaker' I am on my third one. For both pike and perch have a look at the 15 to 40 gm casting weight. I use a Shimano 3000 'catana' reel with 30lb bs Powerpro braid.

I hope that this helps

Third one ? Surely it should last forever if its good?

My abu caster 152 has had a heck of a use (only retired last 5 years because i lack a car to get to big frensham to use it) and i bought it mid 70's ,pike up to 19lb on it but mostly sub 10 .and lots of sea use as well for mackeral ,a wipe down and its fine

I dont think theres a max fish limit on any rod so why replace if it works unless your a an angler who needs to use modern stuff to fit in ,i can stand the sniggers they stop when you outfish the ' name' boys LOL

Several tip eyes but other than that its works as it did new

Not suited to bigger pike you need a clear swim but decent perch give a decent fight on it its a nice old rod

''Third one ? Surely it should last forever if its good?''

The first I gave away to someone in greater need than I,that rod is still very much on the go. The second was stolen and as far as I know may well be in use. I'm on my third and realise the possibility of a fourth or even more. few things 'last for ever'.

It's not about 'names' nor 'fitting in' other people (except family) very rarely see me when fishing anyway, so it's not about showing off to anyone. It's about taking pleasure in using the best equipment one can afford, adding to the joy of fishing. I once had an ABU 'Laplandia' sea trout fly rod (hollow glass with press out butt extension for playing big fish). It was the bee's knees in 1971, but now it would feel like using a clothes prop. Later in the 70s I was presented with a pair of Bruce and Walker 'loch Lomond' compound taper pike rods, now they are where such things belong, on display on a wall along with their original ABU Cardinal reels. When I was a child I had to make do with some really ropey old gear. now after a lifetime of working I can buy myself decent stuff and make no apologies for it.

Your forgiven LOL my rod would be shocked being called ropey but being relatively healthy i have no problem casting an old rod were not talking greenheart,i never understood carbon its strange to me i like to feel a rod carbon has no feel and by the amount of carbon rods i find broken chucked in the bushes doing my rounds they seem to be frail beasts.

I like my zoom its crank handled so the reel sits closer to the rod perfect for those long grass and brambles down the fields after a trout for tea i am not sure a carbon one would last

Lots of things last forever ,perhaps not modern plastic reels but if you can get spares why cant they ,i havnt bought a reel bar two baitrunners since the mid 70's as well ,weight isnt an issue i am not 95 yet

Your idea of decent is different to mine in my case decent is something that lasts a lifetime and does what it did new ,who gives if its old?

Ps to shock you even more the reel i use on it is a roddy (remember them?) 180 its the only ambidextrous closed face i have seen but perhaps newt knows more ,it means i can use it left handed with the rod in the right

I seem to be gradually accumulating lure rods. The one I use most is a 7'3 Blackrock Aventine, which is an ultra light job with basically a push in quivertip. It's for bumping tiny jigheads over the bottom, and I catch a lot of fish by watching the tip after the lure has settled. It's a weird mixture of spinning and quivertipping, but very engaging. It's amazing how subtle the bites can be - I had a jack of a few pounds yesterday that fell off at the net, and it took a two inch soft plastic lure while it was static on the bottom. The bite was the tiniest twitch on the tip, I've had more aggressive takes from roach!

Then I've got a DAM dropshot rod, which I would just describe as a nice but ordinary short, light spinning rod - I don't see that it has any special attributes for dropshotting. A 6' one piece Savage Gear XLNT vertical jigging rod which is a bit specialised and only really gets pulled out for Rutland. And a 10' four piece Sonik spinning rod, which is for anything heavier. Nice versatile rod, that, and fits in a suitcase.

I had a Fox Rage Ultron reel which was quite nice to fish with, but broke. Wouldn't recommend that. I've got Daiwa Ninjas and a Daiwa Sweepfire now, and I am very pleased with them. They feel as if they will be hard wearing, and Daiwa kit has always been durable for me in the past.

Some interesting replies, thank you. I much prefer an active for of fishing. It has been a fair few years since I've been out fishing. I'm wondering what areas of the Broads are free to fish without a permit. Do you need a permit for the Waveney? Cheers
