We have a locally brewed beer called 'Sneck Lifter'. (Jennings brewery Cockermouth) It is supposed to refer to when people were a bit short on cash but had just enough to buy a beer to get them through the door (lift the 'sneck/ door latch) and take their place in the pub.

Ah bless, the poor girl signing "Cockermouth" on the BBC when they had he floods still brings a smile to my face.

Fine post. The word "snecked" or "un-snecked" does not appear in the English language. (Oxford Dictionary).

Would your referrence be to "barbed"?

Interesting thread. Used to catch 'cricket scores' of redfin (Australian term) during the hot summers in NSW, particularly with big thunderheads coming up from the west at Copeton Dam. However, in a gazetted trout stream in northern New England, (Glen Innes), I used gambusia, lip hooked to a 2/0 single hook, gently cast out to the edge of weed beds and catch big, 2 kg redfin. Indeed, lots of small reddies would attack the offering. But also many 1 and 2 kg fish were also attracted.
