Long float rod

Firstly I am mostly a sea angler but do 95% of my fishing with a float rod and centre pin mostly for Mullet Gars and Mackerel currently happy with my 14ft float rod but looking to buy a long float rod and narrowed the choice down to a Preston Absolute 17ft or Spectron 17/20ft. As far as I am aware Preston are not doing a17ft rod in the new range so this maybe the last of the Preston long rods what I really would like to know in your opinion which is best for handling lumps, Mullet are like a Barbel on steriods but most of the fish I catch are under 5lb.

No experience of the kind of rod you're looking for, but those two are the first hits Google suggests for "17 foot power float rod" :)

Might be worth speaking to Harrison - they might have just the thing;

I've got a 15ft GTI, which has a nice progressive action and I often use it for surface fishing for carp with 6/8lb line and had plenty of mid-doubles with it - with the hollow tip section.

For finer work, the solid tipped is better (I have both).

All,

Brings up an interesting question. Do sea anglers use poles? A 17ft rod with a centerpin sound like willow fishing to me.

Phone

Yes sea anglers do use poles i saw some in france

There was a local guy I met when fishing in Fuerteventura - He was using a pole WITH NO ELASTIC so was really a beefed up whip.

I asked what bait he was using - "Bread Paste with a tin of Sardines mixed in" he said.

Next day, I tried it & first cast with a Bubble float, rod & reel & a 4 foot or so tail I was in & caught a good few Sea Bream types.

They almost pulled the rod out of my hand.

I prefer the Tomato Sauce Sardines for a bit of added colour but maybe the Olive Oil variety may also have its advantages?? (re a bit of attractive slick)

Got myself one of these Shakespear travel float rods just about goes in my suitcase last time I was out in Fueteventura did the Sardines and bread paste thing after watch ing the locals but also went and got myself some small crabs at low tide these caught some type of Parrot fish with some serious teeth surprised I was not bitten off. Bream great fun on light tackle.

Can use a pole for fishing in the sea all you need is rocks or a jetty but would not like to stop a really big Mullet on pole gear. The idea behind the long rod is to tackle steep shelving shingle beaches which I will be targetting next year a ready made supply of groundbait after the tinsel chuckers have finished but found my 14ft rod a bit short when trying to keep the line out of the surf when it was a bit lumpy.

Yes these chaps were on the rocks at antibes ,memorable day my youngest (about 8 then) came running back because she spotted some old guy sunbathing nude nearby .

Ofcourse seeing half naked or nude girls or women was normal after the first day or so but old wrinkly guys took her by surprise LOL
