All,

I know nothing regarding this thread. I don't know much more about copyright. My experience is the "protection" is pretty much worthless.

I wasn’t going to enter this discussion although I suspect copyright protection rules are fairly similar worldwide.

Until 1989, a published work had to contain a valid copyright notice to receive protection under the copyright laws. But this requirement is no longer in force — works first published after March 1, 1989 need not include a copyright notice to gain protection under the law.

Now, what is that protection? – Not much! Often, most often, cost of litigation is beyond the value of the damages. That is, if you can even remotely get around the "fair" exclusion.

The most frequent “stumbling block is the “fair” exclusion. As a general rule, if you are using a small portion of somebody else’s work in a non-competitive way and the purpose for your use is to benefit the public, you’re on pretty safe ground. On the other hand, if you take large portions of someone else’s expression for your own purely commercial reasons, the “fair” rule usually won’t apply. (Which I personally have never seen).

As for the internet. Generally, you can claim a fair use right for using a very small portion of text for commentary, scholarship or similar purposes.

A word of caution - academic institutions love to "catch" student plagiarists.

If you think about it a historian relies totally on other peoples work most are just rewriting whats been written before unless by luck he can use his own archeological findings on a vigin site which is rare.

As for finding who has the copyright on my little collection i dont have a clue the printers are long gone ,the writers of the articals long fogotten and the graffics of reels not actually pictures at all ,(i was fooled they look so real) and whoever drew them unknown .

As said its a messy system hence me having to collect everything myself and using my pictures ,i will take a chance on the papers i have i am sure there would be no problem with copyright big companies tend to retain it to stop future problems and as i have the been given the archives i feel safe that copyright passes over with it but i am sure its not 100℅ so easy

Unfortunately "sharing" other peoples work is common today and extremely easily done ,hopefully in all cases the source should be pointed out but in most it is not ,i "shared" the advert on here (with my added line of where it came from ..my recognition of its source) but the advert in questions final resting place gave no clue to where it came from which annoyed me forr a while ,i made the effort why not others?

Unfortunately i dare not donate (anywhere) some pictures i have i KNOW they will be the only pictures that exist so why should someone pinch something so rare ,i spent years finding the objects and spent (in my wifes eyes) a great deal of money on them knowing their rarity (and a couple kindly donated and the giver would be mentioned ) a quick right click and my hard found pictures would be theirs

I remember an old fuji camera i had put the preset owners details details in every pictures exif info (unfortunately so easily removed) but 3 cameras on no such function exists which is a shame and you cant put a nice copyright imprint on the face of a reel like you can with a kids picture where its extremely hard to blur out LOL

Its a conundrum if i take a picture of a reels box the picture is mine but am i pinching the copyright of the box maker ,the box printer ,the graphic designer and whoever paid for it all to be made ? Its not so black and white if you look hard in theory there would be few pictures out there except of snot nosed kids and mangy moggies everything else is owned or made by someone ,perhaps it would be ok if i put everything on the pavement and took pictures from there as in public appears to get round such restrictions?

It's the worst sin in academia. Most uni's insist on electronic submissions and mine use an automated system that provide you with a percentage mark of what can be found on other works and also highlights all those instances on your submitted work so you can check them out.
