Now you can bang on about the superiourity of your 501 all you wish. In this country Abu and their half encapsulated reel designs lost out to other versions of the closed face reel for a number of reasons. The primary reason was functionality, reliability and quality.

On the functionality side, I don't think the half encapsulated design has an advantage for spin fishing or anything else where the pick up pins are reengaged as soon as you've cast out. Well, the fully encapsulated ones I have tried did have more friction during casting, but they were cheap rubbish, and probably not representative. So in the UK, the closed face was mostly seen as a specialist reel for one style of fishing, and that was the one style where the half design is an advantage.

All,

Not counting headwater streams and wetland marshes there are over 3.5 million miles of rivers and streams in the U.S., covering an enormous and diverse landscape.

Many of our angling methods and skills have been introduced by emigrants from the UK.

It must be likely all 60 million of us either overlooked "trotting" although we do fish most of those streams and rivers - or - we are not smart enough to use the proper equipment.

Yes it's in big type so you can read it. On the grand scheme of things do any of you realize how ridiculous your comments are?

Phone, people in different places use different fishing styles, and they use equipment appropriate to their local styles. It's not necessarily that other people's styles wouldn't work there, it's just a matter of custom and culture. As I understand it, the UK river fishing style would not even be legal in much of the US because it depends on constant loose feeding (and can you even easily buy maggots by the pint?)

Over the last few years a lot of US style lure fishing gear has become available in the UK. I've now got several specialised short spinning rods and boxes full of soft plastic lures and jigheads that you just couldn't buy in a high street tackle shop a few years ago. In the 80's, we imported continental style pole fishing styles and that gear became available here too. Trotting is in fact something of a dying art here, because so many people now exclusively fish what you would call pay lakes and the river match fishing scene in which it was developed is a fraction of what it used to be.

It depends on where you live Steve, We only have around two or three commercial fisheries in a 10 to 15 mile radius of us (thank goodness) and we have several really good streams and rivers around us (upper Lea, Ivel, Great Ouse, Ousel, Colne, Ver, etc. etc.) which all have a good head of quality sized fish in them so trotting is extremely popular around here in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

Gozzer,

Is "Uncle Steve" someone? Horrible angler if you ask me. In fact, so bad I am indeed quite like him now days. I'm especially impressed with that side arm cast.
