Angling aids?

After many years trying to educate our dear colonial friend Phone to the nuances of angling in the UK, (and failing miserably), I found this old article showing that even some of his fellow countrymen had tried in the past.

The many different types of floats,(bobbers), that the guy mentions got me thinking about 'revolutionary' aids to more successful angling that I had seen, over the years. Things like the 'self striking' floats, and those that light up when you get a bite, both mentioned in the article. Then there was the self striking rod rest, the clockwork reel, the 'Mabby' swim baiting device, the spring loaded groundbait catapult, even a bicycle with a frame designed to allow a rod holdall to fit snuggly and safely within the frame itself.

Does anyone else remember these, or any other, ideas that were doomed to failure?

Angling is more than just catching fish, if it wasn't it would just be called 'catching'......... John

My local gravel pit used to have an old lady collecting day tickets and I remember a day when she got hit on the back of her head by a tiny pike that had been yanked from the water by someone using an automatic fish striker.

I remember an advert for the rod rest and i remember several years ago on here i think a great argument about gorge hooks which in survival conditions would work idealy but perhaps not in ours lol

I had a float that could actually go upstream its collosal size doomed it to failure

Things that catch fish need not evolve bar materials and weight most of the rest are designed to catch anglers lol

Gozzer,

Great article (and thread). When it comes to goofy there is no question we come in a strong second - and maybe first in some categories.

I have a float that tacks like a sailing vessel up wind. A hollow fiberglass rod that has a bite alarm set off by the tiip and lights up the entire rod like a christmas tree. It's pretty new although I don't remember exactly when I became the proud owner. It has very bright LED bulbs.

AND - the thing I have you all wish you had - but don't - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - --- - - - - -VersaLures Energy Glide Swivels: Here's an interesting concept: instead of using ball bearings in this swivel, the rod that holds the snap is tipped with a magnet, as is the underside of the joint that holds the split ring. But the polarity of the magnets is set to push apart, so the swivel turns on cushion of air inside the chamber. Everything spins because of the reverse magnetism.

Cut and paste from the package.

Lures - don't even go there

Newark Needle Floats.

Very collectable though ,now ofcourse metal stems are commonplace on pole floats ,they were before their time and vastly bigger than it

The ringless rods were short and sweet but i think they will have done better in foreign climes

Those ringless internaly threaded rods were OK untill you got weed stuck to your line, which ended up clogging the inside of the blank.

They seemed a good Idea at fist but they didn't last long Lol.

Newark Needle Floats.

I've still got a couple of these somewhere, the two smallest of the three I think, I got them free with one of the angling papers. The things did actually work, in the right conditions, but the design was so cumbersome they weren't practical. When Walter Bowyer produced these he also did the 'Needle weights', a piece of stainless wire attached to the line by two small float rubbers. The idea being, that they wouldn't snag in the rocks that lined the edge of the Trent on his length at Muskham. They did snag, and I found that a split shot link leger, with the link of fine line, was better. If the shot snagged, either they would pull off, or the link would break.

Marker braid.

Once on a line try to get it off! Slips and is expensive, a small rubber band or bit of pole elastic does a much better job.

Looks the part alongside all the other dispensers in the Fox tackle box though!

Different floats for different folks!
