Chris Brasier aka Rustmeister just wondered about the durability of the rod that can lift a big Chub and swing to hand

Seems as durable as an Acolyte he he

Still the Chub was a good one

Taking the damaged rod back to Fosters of Birmingham on Saturday for a new tip section. The cost of the blank from Harrison is very reasonable and I did consider doing it myself but I want some changes made to both of the rods that I have so I'm going back to where they were made. When ordered I specified fly rings to be fitted to the top sections, these are larger diameter and wouldn't ice up I thought but they still do and I probably wouldn't going fishing if it was that cold anyway. The rings are too close to the blank and the line sticks, these will be changed on both rods.

It seems that I can't avoid Spaghetti Junction so if you don't hear from me again it's been nice knowing you all.

I must be getting old fly rings to me were a simple half spiral ring that sat very close to the rod ,high bells were the stickiest out most ones .

As you can tell modern forms are alien to me the old ones except fly ones worked just fine ,tip and but rings were red they didnt have strange foreign names

Glad you're getting it fixed (and upgraded), you must have caught a lot of memorable fish with that rod.

I have Steve, I do have a backup Harrison which was a 50th birthday present and when I first used that one I ordered another within a couple of months. For the past seven years it's served me very well and deserves to be fixed rather than consigned to the loft. I'm still of the opinion that Acolytes are too fragile.

I think the fragility comes with the territory with modern ultra-lightweight blanks. The walls are just too thin, you don't get that performance for nothing. It's been a problem with fly rods for a while, slightest bit of impact damage and they fail catastrophically.

Hardy claim that incorporating silica nano-spheres in their resin increases impact resistance, so there might be some technical innovation filtering down.

The first time Joe Taylor ("brother" of Fred J - actually a cousin) saw a hollow glass rod he asked "Can ya tread on 'em ?"

That rod (Frank Guttfield's) eventually got trodden upon - not by me I hasten to add - as the said FG was somewhat unhappy about it.

Tread on that little split bamboo fly rod of yours and the very worst will be scratched varnish or a bent ring.

While I am sure you are right, I shall endeavour not to put it to the test!

Impact resistance is definitely a worthwhile consideration for small stream fly fishing. And for nymphing with bead heads, for that matter.

I have a 16ft sowerbutts ru-lite hollow glass rod (must be hollow at the butt end otherwise you couldnt lift it) and as the thick end is like a scaffold pole you probably could stand on it LOL

I remember the owner of the fishing tackle shop next to the clarendon pub in folkestone showing me a new plastic tackle box made of "indestructible" new plastic i put it on the floor and put my heel through it ,his face was a picture ,i left .....
