I've got a new vegetarian neighbour and I don't want dead magpies dropping in to her garden as I try to be a good neighbour.

Isn't that tantamount to admitting that killing Magpies is what a "bad" neighbour would do?

:clap3: What the eye doesn't see, the heart doesn't grieve over. She has no objection to me killing rats in her or my garden but most people see magpies as feathered friends, they don't know they kill other birds and take their eggs and chicks. :clap3:

I think I'll take dodging the question as being that you didn't want to give the truthful answer.

Birds eat other birds, it's a fact of life (and death) in the feathered community.

It's a nonsense to just kill any bird that eats other birds.

Hawks, Falcons, Harriers, Eagles, Shrikes, Corvids, Gulls, Woodpeckers,(and more) they all do it, and yet their sometimes prey is still here.

Reduction in numbers of some of the prey species usually has other reasons than predation by birds.

:clap3: Not dodging anything but as she has bird feeders in her garden I don't want to upset her by dropping magpies in her garden when there are "more discrete" ways of culling them. :clap3:

:clap3: Talk about cheeky, a pair of magpies are nest building in a Scottish pine that over hangs my boundary, I've spoken to the tree's owners and they want them gone, so I'll wait until it's built then they're gone as the other magpies will have claimed their territories and will stay clear. :clap3:

You're anthropomorphising, they're not being cheeky, they're just doing what comes naturally, a shame they won't be left to get on with it in the same way that you would expect in similar circumstances.

Everything shot just means an opening for another to take the space ,you will run out of cartridges far quicker than the targets

If shooting worked there would be no grey squirrels

:clap3: Magpies, like most birds are territorial and once they've claimed "their patch" other magpies keep out and claim their own patch so once they're gone I shouldn't get any more until after the breeding season. The most worrying thing is that from their nest site they can see right into the ivy where the blackbirds nest is. :bye2:

I counted 20 magpies in one tree a few years ago ,they co-exist very nicely in flocks
