I wasn't suggesting you do a fresh install and then install all your apps and data from scratch. Just OS and all the updates.

Maybe you just have a duff 'un?

I may do an inplace reinstall if it doesnt improve but i am noticing semaphore problems copying data from other drives so maybe sunday if the weather is bad

looks like the whole pc is ill

Bit better now ,i had a go at some startup progs and it boots at 1.20 ish and the hard drive activity is about a minute after boot but games are no faster loading ,i have come to the conclusion i paid 50% more for about the same drive as the last one but to send it back with the hassle of moving whole partitions back to the old one i really cant be bothered ,i think if i only hibernated the machine it would work ok but i switch mine completely off

My mobo is old so perhaps the the connections between the cpu memory and drives are slow but it was a nice board in its day but to upgrade it pointless as the highest speed cpu it can take is not much faster and updating mobo cpu and memory would be expensive

update i found the answer if i use "hibernate" and close down and switch off at mains on restart its far faster starting up (it loads exactly what was on your desktop on shutting down even skipping the sign in screen) if i shut down (which i always have) theres no increase in speed from the old drive.
i presume it saves to the flash memory on the drive whats needed in the hibernate mode?

in a laptop because its always powered (the battery lets it sleep it doesnt switch completely off unless the battery is exhausted) i think its even faster as it can retain data in memory and flash part of drive so will boot even faster?

anyway hibernate is ok i can still switch off at mains but as yet seen no other difference in game loads but not tried after hibernating yet.

the drive IS faster but only in certain circumstances

Chesters1,

My Windows 10 went kaput.  I received a new Windows 10 thumb drive from Dell as the computer is less than a year old.  I am a minimal user, no games.  It took 48 hours to reinstall Windows 10 and what few files I have.

This is a super fast XPS 8900, Dell's best with 8 stops per second. (The gaming board boosts the speed even more (I forget the name, would you like to know?  I'll post it if you do.

I'm told your computer will be only as "fast" as the slowest component - regardless.  The OS has to be loaded on the new disk (no, I have NO idea what I am talking about) but the number of "stops" per second will still be a limiting factor.

I thought once loaded on "start-up" the program would operate at maximum capabilities.

Unfortunately now the good old 'disk' appears to be obselete ,most things bought now are just a code you imput to show the software you bought it.
Fine for those on super fast broadband but not so good for us people in the sticks with <2 mbs you not only have the pc on for a week downloading vast files but pay the electric for the privilage for doing so and then ofcourse a few more days updating the fricking thing .
Unfortunately the highly unlikely scenario your drives are actually moving files at 6gb a second is pointless if the little tracks on the circuit board and the chips controlling them are allowing traffic at a tenth of that if your lucky .
As you say to be a fast pc everything on it and in it needs to be fast ,unfortunately moving electrical impulses along copper tracks is now slow
