New Rod Quandary

I'd say it's a matter of personal taste, it's much easier to clean with the plastic on, but even the worst mashed bread grime comes off cork easily enough with some warm soapy water and a scrub.

I prefer the feel of cork to plastic and also feel that there's less potential for reel movement if (like me) you prefer sliding ring fittings to the Fuji type reel seat.

I don't like clean shiny rods - someone else might decide they like them more than me, grunged up is good, imo.

Take a scalpel or a Stanley knife to it. :)

Off ... as already said, cork mis easy enough to clean, and much nicer to hold than plastic. Also consider that moisture trapped beneath the plastic can and does cause discolouration etc over time and there are also potential issues with mould etc.

I knew a boy at school who was very proud of his Casio digital watch. It still had a manky bit of film covering the face, which it was packaged with at the factory. Sometimes he would peel it back to show how pristine the glass was... See also people who keep the plastic wrapping on their sofa!

Taking the placcy off the handle used to be the first thing I did when I got a new rod but now I never rush to take the cork covering off.

Obviously the covering is meant to be removed and is just there to protect and keep the handle clean until it's bought but leaving it on for however long you wish to does it no harm whatsoever....it just keeps the cork clean. The tales of water getting under the placcy and discoloring the cork is pretty much nonsense, or if there is a bit of a water mark it just wipes off when you do remove the placcy cover anyhow.

I'd say leave the covering on until your sure your gonn'a keep the rod as if you decide to sell it on it will be more desirable to buyers with it still in place.

I always gave mine a couple of coats of 50/50 varnish and turps ,it seems to keep out the groundbait stains but still gives a bit of grip without making it to obvious its been varnished ,wipes clean with a soapy sponge

Not tried it but a wash of diluted pva may do the same? Seal the pores but keep it looking like cork

Good thinking

When my No 1 daughter was reading geology at Imperial in the late 1970s, she needed a bicycle for digs to uni and back

Received wisdom was that the life of a bicycle in London in those days was about 11 days before it got pinched

So I purchased a reasonable S/h ladies' bicycle and a small tin of reddish-brown primer. Painted frames, handle-bars and wheel rims patchily - so with a little oil and chain grease it looked a rusty old wreck.

The bike lasted the three years at Imperial and during her subsequent PhD at Exeter.
