I rarely change my mind once it's made up Phone, (but you already know that).

I certainly can't change what I saw, and I do believe that that fish showed some level of thought.

Perhaps we are looking at it the wrong way ,perhaps american anglers are very good anglers or american fish are very stupid fish

English fish are stupid fish but english anglers are more stupid

Hopefully you can cast your dobber and catch crucian using american angling techniques .

I wonder how many times a typical american fish is caught ? If its a new fish every chuck then they will have learnt nothing if they indeed learn.

Chesters1,

You are pretty much correct when saying our fish aren't caught that often (I guess that's what a fish a chuck means?).

However, our paylakes have fish (carp) caught hundreds if not thousands of times.

I don't know why you would mention Crucians - nobody fishes for tiddlers over here.

Artificial baits only seem to work in conjunction with samples of the real thing.

Fish are neither intelligent or stupid, they only have one instinct - survival.

Some times this instinct favours anglers, sometimes it doesn't.

Talking about Brylcreem - I have an Uncle who used to rub his hand through his hair then run the line through fingers to make it float - "Yorkshire Mucilin".

When using my old greenheart rods, and even with these new-fangled split-bamboo - both are jointed via brass ferrules - I always rub the male ferrule across those hairs of my scalp that I still have left. The natural grease (from the sebaceous glands in the scalp if you want to be technical ) puts sufficient lubrication on the ferrules so that they come apart easily when one packs up. Done it all my angling life and never had a stuck ferrule.

Survived the "Brylcreem" era without ever using it - from observation I thought it attracted the wrong sort of bird.

One of Fred J Taylor's little whimsies was if one of his mates caught a good fish.

An example.....

"Oh ah, nice roach, Dick, nice roach - it just goes to show there must be fools amongst fish as well as amongst anglers"
