 A liquid will always find its own true level & the curve makes the bubble demonstrate this.

Not actually convinced that the "Bubble" is in fact a bubble at all?? Is it just that the tube is only part filled and the space/gap left merely gives the effect?? Or is that the definition of a bubble anyway??

time and technology moves on, I did find it an interesting read though as most wouldnt realise technical aspects behind something that appears at first glance to be so simple a design

I believe this may help. tube with a 10-mm nominal lightpath, provided at one end with a fused silica tube for filling the tube with a solution of 4 percent holmium oxide by weight in 10 percent aqueous perchloric acid. The purity of the holmium oxide is 99.99 percent (as indicated by the manufacturer) and the perchloric acid and distilled water are pure reagent grade prepared at NIST by sub-boiling distillation.  

Good for about 5 years when the atomic weight is determined

I think i would use a water level instead of a bubble not so easy to chuck together for the price of a few pence plastic bubble but more accurate i am sure if each riser tube is finely graduated .

As i mentioned levels are not just used for leveling but grading in some cases a slope

Phone, I'll keep that in mind next time I'm hanging a picture frame on the wall!!

However, although a picture may be "Technically Level" - may not look straight against its immediate surroundings.

(Say an un level fire surround or not dead plumb wallpaper)

Our last house was a woodern barn at the the turn of the last century (it was still visible in the loft) then in the 1950's had many additions added to it (13 flat roofs all leaked!) There wasnt a straight wall in it ,if you hung a picture dead level it looked extremely unlevel!

There's a very specialised Spirit Level for this chesters - It's a Clinometer which measure compound Angles from one plane to another (a lot smarter than just a protractor & keep "LEVEL" in mind as well)

These are a relative arm & a leg to buy!!
