New Species

You're the only one I've seen mention it Cory, that's why I said 'again'.

I will repeat what I've said before. I've never used the phrase 'a wee bit of angling'. I do class myself as an angler, because I use a rod, line, and hook, as opposed to a net, bow, spear, or any other implement, I also abide by the rules laid down for the practise. If that makes me sound like a "pretentious knob" to some, then so be it. From my viewpoint, someone who tries to over complicate a simple discussion on an angling forum, about the very thing we all seek to catch. Then says we are all wrong in how we refer to it, is much more deserving of the title.

John.

My memory is better than yours then.

Just to be pedantic, modern fish are not our ancestors. You share a common ancestor with fish, just as you share a common ancestor with all of the people on the planet - it's just that your common ancestor with fish lived much, much longer ago than your common ancestor with people.

BTW, "fish" isn't actually a very useful term. We are more closely related to a salmon or a carp than a salmon or carp is to a thornback ray.

What really bakes peoples noodles though is that there is a continuous line of ancestors running from primitive jawless fish, right up to us and at no point in that seemingly endless list of intermediate forms did any pair of parents give rise to offspring that were a different species to them or which were significantly morphologically different to them.

The problem isn't what people don't know, it's what they know that just ain't so.

You can say 'fish' to me anytime in conversation and I, along with the rest of the population will instantly know what you are talking about.

Watching Attenborough's 'Blue Planet, he mentions 'Fish' on a multitude of occasions and I am sure very few people sit shouting at the telly!

It's the tomato thing really, 'clever people' know it's a fruit, common sense tells everybody that tomatoes don't go in a fruit salad or fruit trifle.

And as you said, with ten thousand odd fish and chip shops in the UK personally I'll stick to using the term.

Does it matter ,latin ,hebrew english or russian is a man made concept !you can shout fish to a fish and it wont know its whats being talked about.

Latin is now how things of revelance are spoken of in the mouths of scholars does this mean nothing predates the speaking of latin?

A fish is a fish even when its not only an idiot would argue unless their life depended on it being something else .

Myself not puffed up with a sense of self importance ,nor having to because my life is sad and empty just go to a fish monger and ask for fish ,what type? he will say because he isnt pretentious either.

Why is it attenboroughs blue panet? He just says other peoples words over other peoples footage collected and edited by other people?

"Speciation" has been going on since DNA replication became a reality (and a pedant might argue "even before that")

"Science" magazine has apparently only just rediscovered it.
