Why do people live in countries where you have to put shoes on to walk from the beach to a toilet 20 feet away!!!!

I've experienced that here thanks Chesters, It was probably about 1959, my parents left my sister and I on the beach at Westward Ho and pushed off elsewhere for a few hours. The back of the beach was huge pebbles the size of dinner plates, by midday the tide was in and the pebbles were the only place you could be and you couldn't stand on them for very long. I don't remember how we got through it as it was too long ago and I was only 9, but I've never forgotten it, all I remember is hopping from one foot to another, (no shoes).

I've heard this saying since I was a kid back in the 1950s,so it looks like Pratchett must have heard it and thought it sounded good, and used it later in life. Authors do draw from life experiences.

John.

You're right there Gozzer, a few years ago my wife and I were on the ferry listening to a conversation going on between the members of a returning football team sitting opposite, woman was talking to a player who had 'become' a vegetarian, "So you don't eat meat?" "no." "What about bacon?" "No" "Ham?" "No." "What about that very thin ham?" "No."

Imagine my thoughts when I saw the same thing repeated on a 'Royle Family' episode a few months later!

I went to Tenerife earlier this year, and made the rooky mistake on the first day of trying to walk to the pool in bare feet. Managed to style it out, but it bloody hurt! Why would you pave a path in a hot country with dark coloured tiles??

I woke to -6 this morning....

Steve's story reminds me of the tale from Lismore in NSW where the folks got sick and tired of the barefoot "ferrals" living in a camp just outside town on the other side of the river.

When the bridge needed refurbishing, the walkways were covered in Aluminium plating.

Rumour has it that the choice of materials was deliberate.

The weather outside has been rather pleasant today. Sunny and about 12 degrees.

I have been out in the garden finishing off the new chicken run.

Colder now though, down to 2 or 3 degrees

Blimey how do they know it?

Pond complete ice and no Eskimos breaking the ice ,no ducks so the half loaf went to the little birds if they know what it is.

I wore a fleece over my t shirt and the zip seized so by half way home I was sweating ,hopefully it get colder longer

Well here we are again. Still below freezing and we're well into the morning and snow.

Just a dusting at the moment but enough to reflect off any sunshine and ensure it doesn't warm up.

It's due to be properly cold tonight and more snow on Friday and Saturday before it starts to slowly warm up.
